Some years ago, the NSAI group brought in Marc-Alan Barnette to do a workshop and performance. I just
came across some of his videos, and this one stood out. "It All Begins With The Song"

Newer Faces
By Jeff Mason
This year I’ve analyzed and written about some of the early, pioneering producers. George Martin, Tom Dowd and Sam Phillips were among the most innovative and groundbreaking producers at the beginning of the modern recording industry.
I’d like to direct your attention to some of the newer producers working behind today’s sounds. My starting off point is the 2013 release of Paul McCartney’s last album “New.” It was a well received album that peaked at number 3 on the UK Albums Chart and on the US Billboard 200. The interesting thing about this record was the quality of it’s production. McCartney, bravely, in my opinion made the decision to employ four young producers. His main worry was that the “recordings wouldn’t fit together.” That wasn’t the case and the well crafted songs hold together. They reflect McCartney’s joy and anxiety about his recent marriage and his pre Beatle’s life.
What became apparent to me in researching these producers is the element of a “passing of the torch” from one generation to the next with McCartney being a willing facilitator. There are some in depth reviews and one of the best can be found at Pitchfork. Wikipedia has a good entry too.
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/18634-paul-mccartney-new/ This article talks about a “density” in the production and I have to agree.
Giles Martin is the son of the late Sir George Martin. He is the producer responsible for the remixing and sonic collage on “Love.” This was the soundtrack to Cirque du Soleill’s successful Las Vegas homage to The Beatles. In 2004, he enjoyed considerable success as producer of Hayley Westenra’s classical album “Pure.” He has just completed a remix of Beatle number one songs to stereo and surround sound “The Beatles 1+.” As executive producer for McCartney’s album his looping and remix skills are evident.

For the acoustic guitar songs McCartney turned to Ethan Johns, son of famed Beatles engineer Glynn Johns. As with the other producers, Ethan’s credits read like a musical who’s who with artists like Tom Jones, Ray LaMontagne, Ryan Adams and Laura Marling turning up in his resume. I like the song “Early Days” based on memories of Paul’s days with John Lennon.

I am happy to report that McCartney avoids the saccharine, sweet traits of earlier albums. There is a real edge and grit to this album. This is probably due to McCartney’s collaboration with hot producers Paul Epworth and Mark Ronson. Epworth co-wrote the opening track “Save Us” and came up with a great guitar riff for the song. Other McCartney/Epworth songs are “Queenie Eye” and “Road.” Paul Epworth came to real prominence with Adele’s “21” album and the James Bond song “Skyfall.” Other credits include Florence and the Machine and U2. He has opened a new studio in London. It’s in a famous church that has been converted to a studio.

Mark Ronson is another producer with a direct, personal connection to music royalty. His step father is Mick Jones guitar player from Foreigner. His credits include the Amy Winehouse album “Back to Black,” Adele’s “19” album and last years mega hit with Bruno Mars, “Uptown Funk.” Ronson is an accomplished mix artist and DJ. He had been the DJ at McCartney’s wedding and had impressed with his infectious vibe. He produced the title song “New” and the moody “Alligator.” He has just moved into a new studio complex in London.

I think these younger producers contributed an energy and a contemporary sound to this project. McCartney has since returned to his original label Capitol. Rumor has it he’ll be using another hot Adele producer for his next album. More on that next month.
