Explorations: The Black Keys
by Jackie Mason
The Black Keys were formed in 2001. To be precise they formed in the days immediately after 9/11. The two band members,
drummer Patrick Carney and guitarist Dan Auerbach had been neighbors since childhood in Akron, Ohio. Their story is a compelling
musical journey. This next link is an in depth interview between Patrick Carney and Drew Dempsey in Studio 1 at Sunset Sound
Recorders in Hollywood, CA. It premiered on Apr 15, 2023. Patrick takes us through the years, describing their musical influences,
their recording methods and tastes, their producers and collaborators and their songwriting style. He talks honestly about the highs
and lows of being in a band for twenty three years.

I’m only going to scratch the surface in this article. Twenty three years gives us a full catalog to discover. This is an initial
exploration into their success. I’ve been aware of their presence for a long time. They have a unique, recognizable sound and I took
notice when I heard their music in commercials, tv shows, movies and video games. They’ve licensed over 300 songs. Here’s an ad
for Molson M featuring the band,

This is why I took an interest in them. This talent for sync placements has made them a household name. That makes them a
worthwhile study if you wish to succeed in the music game.
I remember an ad for music in a video game and one of the song examples was “Howlin’ For You.” It peaked at number
three on the US Alternative Airplay Chart (Billboard). That’s not that high. See Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howlin%27_for_You
But just look at all the syncs it’s picked up. This is from the same Wikipedia entry”
"Howlin' for You" is featured on the soundtrack of the E A Sports video games, NHL11, NHL Slapshot and Need For Speed
Payback. The song has been featured in TV commercials and films for The Dilemma, LImitless, The Guilt Trip, Moneyball, Dark
Shadows, Citizen Gangster, DeadPool, Venom:Let There Be Carnage, and The Bad Guys. It is used as the theme song to the
Australian police drama television series, CopsL.A.C., and has been featured in American television series, CSI Miami, Detroit 187,
Entourage, Once Upon A Time, Prime Suspect, Chuck, Necessary Roughness , Suits, Lucifer, Secret Diary of a Call Girl and The
Chicago Code. MLBs Toronto Blue Jays used it as their home run song (except for José Bautista), and the NHL's Arizona Coyotes
use it as their goal song.[7] The song was also featured in NBA 2K14 and The Crew 2.
The song was used in a feature on Sky Sports coverage of the 2014 Canadian Grand Prix. Samsung also used this in the Galaxy
Note 8 promo and launch event livestream and is also being used in the ad for the Galaxy Note 8.
The song has also been used in the Honda CRV and Wells Fargo "Earning Your Trust" commercials.” Here’s the link for the song.

So what’s their secret? I think it’s their simplicity. Patrick says it in the first interview. It’s a simple blues/rock format with simple
lyrics and it’s a formula that works. What is not so simple is the crafting of their music sound. Next month I will delve deeper into this
most unusual success story. So long from the song motel.

There are several websites around for finding chords and lyrics for songs,
and I just came across this one. I am very impressed. It is free to register
but it is possible to do searches without having to register.
We are asking members to renew their dues for 2024. It costs only $5 per year,
