The Kinks
By Jeff Mason
The Beatles arrived in America on February 7th, 1964. They were the spearhead of a British musical invasion.
They were followed by several bands from Liverpool including The Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers and
Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas. Also, among that first wave were the Newcastle band, The Animals, and representing
London The Dave Clark Five and The Rolling Stones. Other bands that followed were The Who and the underrated Kinks.
The Kinks third single “You Really Got Me” was released in 1964. For me, as a fourteen year old, that song was a
sonic explosion. I had never heard a guitar sound like that. The song, written by Ray Davies, was blues based and it
could be argued was the beginning of Punk and Metal. The lead solo, by Ray’s brother Dave, sounded like it was played
through a fuzz box. How Dave got that guitar tone has become something of an urban myth and legend. One story says
there was a fight between the two brothers and one of them sliced the speaker with a razor blade. Dave says his brother
had nothing to do with the slicing of the speaker cone of his “little green amp.” (Wikipedia) He was at home and was upset
at being separated from his girlfriend and he angrily slashed the speaker of the Elipico amplifier.(Wikipedia)

I have heard that someone stuck a knitting needle in the speaker. Folks have been slicing up speakers trying to
capture that unique, distorted sound ever since!

The fourth single “All Day And All Of The Night” was another barn burner. Later to be covered by Van Halen and
The Stranglers. The band was soon headlining tours in Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. There has always been
a volatility between the two brothers and between Dave Davies and drummer Mick Avory. This resulted in on stage fights
and subsequent, poor, onstage behavior led to the group being barred from performing in the USA by The American
Federation of Musicians. This certainly hurt the band, financially, at a peak moment in their career.
From 1965 to 1970 they released a series of stellar singles. All written by Ray Davies, they provide a uniquely
British interpretation of American blues, country and British music hall. The lovely “Tired of Waiting For You,”
“Set Me Free,” and “See My Friends.” Yes they are all exceptional pop hits. They closed out 1965 with the raucous,
rocker “Till The End of The Day.” In 1966 we were treated to the social satire of “Dedicated Follower of Fashion.”
The brilliant, traditional jazz of “Sunny Afternoon ” which like it’s predecessor introduces us to a character sketch.
This about a down on his luck playboy. The year ends with the socially aware “Dead End Street.” The next year we
were treated to the haunting romance in “Waterloo Sunset.” and the beautiful description in “Autumn Almanac.”
In 1970 the band was able to return to the USA. “Apeman” and the incomparable ”Lola.” The latter about a beautiful
cross dresser with a “dark brown voice.” The hits dried up until 1982 and “Come Dancing.” This is a classic look at
the ballroom scene of post war Britain. “He’d end up blowing all his wages for the week, All for a cuddle and a peck
upon the cheek.”
While the hits dried up the music never did. Next month I’ll take a closer look at the albums and
a possible Kink’s reunion!
