Staying Up To Date 2
by Jackie Mason
Last month I introduced you to a new song teacher, Keppie Couts. I liked the freshness of her teaching style. I was happy that she was up to date with the songs she chose to present and analyze. https://college.berklee.edu/news/208/student-profile-keppie-coutts# And this is a link to her music.

Another teacher who I enjoy is Robin Frederick. Her teaching style is always bright and informative. Find her videos on YouTube, just to get started. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=robin+frederick Alternatively, jump in on her excellent web page at https://robinfrederick.com There you may find links to her song breakdowns and advice on writing. You can spend a long time with a song coach and I cannot think of a better one than Robin. You can sign up to her monthly blog and learn from her “Free hit song guide or songwriting tip every month.” This will keep you informed on the latest musical trends.
https://mysongcoach.com She’s the author of several books on songwriting. They are very good. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=robin+frederick&i=stripbooks&crid=1NX0J6HU5MQ7G&sprefix=robin+frederick%2Cstripbooks%2C126&ref=nb_sb_noss_2
Finally, you may take a plunge and sign up for one of her courses which are available on her web page. Robin will teach you how to stay up to date.
One of the important things that I’ve learned from Robin is knowing my genre. Mine is singer/songwriter. There’s really no point in my submitting my music to a heavy metal or jazz want ad. One area I’d like to stretch out in is the music cues market. There’s no better person to learn that specialized skill than Dean Krippaehne. https://www.deankrippaehne.net/
Dean has a long list of credits. It’s impressive.
https://www.deankrippaehne.net/credits You can spend a long time learning from Dean. He has a strong YouTube presence. Check out this video, “Dean Krippaehne: The Man Behind the Music of Your Favorite TV Shows” presented by Paul Croteau.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V3MP2VsZac&t=11s I’ve read a couple of his books “Demystifying The Cue” and “Demystifying The Genre.” Both are very informative. His website is a good place to hang out in. Both these books have workshops on his site. Another book is “Write Submit Forget Repeat” which is available on Amazon. One of the best quotes from Dean is “It’s not the gear it’s the ear.” The interview with Paul Croteau will be very helpful if that’s a genre you are interested in perfecting.
On a more personal note I was fortunate to see ace ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro. It’s interesting how huge that instrument has become and I’m sure Jake is one of the main reasons. It was a great concert and only the second concert I’ve attended since Covid in 2020. Here’s a video of Jake playing “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” It’s probably the video that introduced him to the world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw6YL_l2YxA Now he tours the world.
That’s all I have today. Love and greetings from the song motel. Be safe.
