Summer Of Change
By Jeff Mason
This summer I’ve made a conscientious effort not to buy any new equipment. I read an article in
Recording magazine’s March 2012 edition which inspired me to make this decision. This is a
special issue called Songwriters In The Studio, and it includes several articles that I find to
be thought provoking.
The first article is written by Beto Hale and is titled "From Songwriting To Final
Master." It is a blow by blow description of Hale’s creative process in producing his album
Rebirth. “It always starts with the song,” says Beto. He opens his article telling how his initial song
ideas were created on his laptop’s QUERTY keyboard while at a Starbucks or a local park. I think
the change of scenery may be inspiring. Beto Hale is a Mexican composer, producer and multi-
instrumentalist based in Los Angeles. He was the editor of Recording’s sister publication Musico
Pro and is now Recording’s Southern California editor. He has a neat website at www.betohale.com
and you can hear his music on Spotify.
“Look at the gear you already have, and squeeze all the juice you can out of it before buying any
new toys; you’ll be surprised at what you can do with what you already have,” Hale suggests at
the end of his article where he lists the lessons learned from this project.
I have a friend and collaborator who has an iPad, and we’ve experimented making music
with it. The iPad comes with a fully functioning studio, and there are some great Music Apps that
can accompany it. I won’t say I haven’t been tempted, but an App is only as good as the time you
can put into learning and using it.
I am a singer and guitar player, and I’ve always had a problem recording myself. In
another article, Hale interviews producer Ronan Chris Murphy. Hale identifies my problem with the
following question: “When you work with a singer-songwriter guitarist who can’t seem to perform
optimally unless he or she is singing and playing at the same time, how do you mike them?” Murphy
answers, “that the artist who sings and plays the guitar at the same time is perhaps the most
technically difficult situation.” Murphy has a new studio in Santa Monica, California and has
worked with artists as diverse as King Crimson and Neil Young. It is because of his work with
Young that he has an affinity with singer/songwriters. He also teaches production at his studio
Veneto West. You can learn more about him at http://homerecordingbootcamp.com and
In another Recording magazine article, Emmylou Harris discusses the making of her
album Hard Bargain. Harris has no technical prowess and prefers to leave that stuff to others.
She, instead, concentrates on her writing and playing. It may be a wise choice. Harris records
her songs on a cassette recorder and leaves it to her producers to add embellishments. She likens
a good song to a jewel and the arrangement to a setting which allows the jewel to shimmer even
more.
Another inspiring article in this issue is written by Joe Bouchard and is titled A
Demo In A Day. Here the writer chronicles his working day and demonstrates how he is able to
create a demo. I am planning to follow his example. Joe Bouchard is a singer, songwriter and bass
player. You may hear his music at www.bluecoupeband.com
Recording is my favorite magazine because it covers all aspects of recording and gives
great advice. I also like to read Guitar World and Guitar Player because of their equipment
reviews. I find that these periodicals keep me up to date with the music business.
See you next month.
