Volume 30, No. 10
October 2025
The next zoom feedback session will be
Sunday October 5th at 5pm. Please see the zoom details
at the end of this newsletter. We will also send details closer to the date,
under a separate e-mail, and an announcement on the Facebook group page.
Also we would like to get an idea from our members about what your expectations are for
our Song feedback sessions. We think it may help when you submit your songs if you can
let us know what particular area you want to hear about, and maybe what your goals are
for the particular song. Any suggestions are most welcome. We want to help you improve
your music, and we always try to be constructive.
Please e-mail us at isgorlando@gmail.com if you have any questions.
We are asking members to renew their dues. It costs only $5 per year,
and it helps us to defray costs for the zoom meetings (and Christmas parties).
We have 2 methods of payment. Either paypal to our treasurer Asli Goncer's
paypal account. The paypal access is at aslivision@gmail.com
or you can snail mail a $5 check to:
Asli Goncer
2849 Babylon Court

Either way, we appreciate your continued support.

“Figure Out Your Title At Your Earliest Convenience”
Pat Pattison, Professor at Berklee College of Music, where he teaches lyric writing and poetry.
The Beatles were tricksters when it came to writing songs. They were masters at playing the press and
would put out multiple stories when referring to the inspiration behind their songs. Two of my favorite
titles are “Day Tripper” and “Ticket To Ride.” Released together, in 1965, as a double A-side single.
The Beatles were at the height of their popularity and rapidly evolving as musicians and composers.
Initially one might think “Day Tripper” is about a journey but we soon find the girl has a “one way ticket.”
The second verse tells us it's about deception and seduction. It tells us “she’s a big teaser” and in the
third verse “ she only plays one night stands.” Check out this informative link from “The Beatles Bible.”
https://www.beatlesbible.com/songs/day-tripper/ Here we find out that it’s not just about a fleeting
love affair. It’s a rock ’n’ roll song about “Day trippers who go on a day trip? Usually on a ferryboat or
something.” Paul McCartney. But wait there’s more. “But it was kind of-you know, you’re just a weekend
hippie.”
An AI explanation says “The song "Day Tripper" is about someone who refuses to commit fully,
either in a relationship or a psychedelic experience.” I think Artificial Intelligence is being discreetly polite.
More from the Beatles’ Bible. “Day Tripper” was to do with tripping, Acid was coming in on the scene,
and often we’d do these songs about “ the girl who thought she was it” But this was just a tongue- in- cheek song about someone who was a day tripper, a Sunday painter, Sunday driver, someone who was committed only in part to the idea. Whereas we saw ourselves as full time- trippers, fully committed drivers, she was just a day tripper.” This is a good technique to use for your titles. Think of you-the writer as the perpetrator of an in-joke. For teaching purposes only I will provide the full lyric.
"Day Tripper"
“Got a good reason
For taking the easy way out
Got a good reason
For taking the easy way out now
She was a day tripper
A one way ticket, yeah
It took me so long to find out
And I found out
She's a big teaser
She took me half the way there
She's a big teaser
She took me half the way there, now
She was a day tripper
One way ticket, yeah
It took me so long to find out
And I found out
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Tried to please her
She only played one night stands
Tried to please her
She only played one night stands, now
She was a day tripper
Sunday driver, yeah
It took me so long to find out
And I found out
Day tripper, yeah
Day tripper, yeah
Day tripper
Day tripper, yeah
Day tripper “

On “Ticket To Ride” they play with the title and its meaning. McCartney has said “Ticket To Ride”
references a British Railway ticket from a town called Ryde, on the Isle of Wight.” “John Lennon
has his own version of the theme as well, saying that the song talks about a health card lugged
around by prostitutes in Hamburg – where the band spent most of their early years – to prove that
they were safe and free from diseases.” I like the second explanation better.
Here’s another informative link.

Once again for teaching purposes only here are the words.
"Ticket to Ride"
“I think I'm gonna be sad,
I think it's today, yeah
The girl that's driving me mad
Is going away
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care
She said that living with me
Is bringing her down yeah
For she would never be free
When I was around
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care
I don't know why she's ridin' so high,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me
Before she gets to saying goodbye,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me
I think I'm gonna be sad,
I think it's today yeah
The girl that's driving me mad
Is going away, yeah
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care
I don't know why she's ridin' so high,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me
Before she gets to saying goodbye,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me
She said that living with me,
Is bringing her down, yeah
For she would never be free
When I was around
Ah, she's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care
My baby don't care, my baby don't care
My baby don't care, my baby don't care
My baby don't care, my baby don't care”
So it’s another lesson in how to make your titles “ambidextrous.” Let me know what you think.
Constructive comments are always welcome. Either way they are both heavy songs.
From the sleazy, sad Song Motel I will see you soon.

Metadata Revisited
Hi folks, The topic of my mini article is Metadata, here are some quick tips about preparing, tagging and
sharing your audio files if you wish to send them to others for pitching/sync/streaming/CD creation or whatever.
There is a company called disco.ac that is quite popular among songwriters and sync agents/supervisors.
This is a great tutorial about it:
https://school.disco.ac/article/what-is-metadata-and-how-should-i-fill-it-out
Here are some other very helpful (short) youtube videos.

Disco.ac is not free. As of my latest research, here is their pricing page:
There is a handbook which has all the info you may need. It is not recommended for people with
less than 100 songs in their catalog.
https://school.disco.ac/handbook
We will be publishing our newsletters on a quarterly basis from now on, so in January I plan to cover
details of a (somewhat free) alternative to disco.ac
It has many of the same features, metadata, file sharing etc. For the free tier you sign in on a google
email, and you get cloud storage for up to 50 songs or 1 G. (Which amounts to about 20MB per song.)
Here is an example of a site I have been working on to test it out:
