Here is an article from Andrea Stolpe that I found very useful.
https://www.andreastolpe.com/articles/8-tips-to-setting-lyric-to-music?utm_source=MailingList
We are asking members to renew their dues for 2022. It costs only $5 per year,
and it helps us to defray costs for the zoom meetings.
We have 2 methods of payment. Either paypal to our treasurer Asli Goncer's
paypal account. The paypal access is at aslivision@gmail.com
or you can mail a $5 check to

Either way, we appreciate your continued support.
Is it Over?
By Jackie Mason
My title is a reference to the pandemic. I hope it’s over because after two long years I feel a need to move. It’s spring! I researched hotels in Naples, Florida and was stunned by the price of a room. I have a creative idea about that area but for now it’s remains on the back burner. So I researched summer music camps. The idea for writing a song about spring popped into my head. There has to be a good story in my song for it to be good.
This is how I came to write this article, with those ideas percolating in my brain. The first person I found in my research was Grammy nominated songwriter Shelly Peiken who had even written an article describing her mixed feelings about songwriting camps. https://www.shellypeiken.com/blog/songwriting-camp It’s interesting because she”d be one of the “headliners” or “topliners” at any camp. Her success as a writer would guarantee that. “Perhaps I’m ready to immerse myself and have nothing but passionate SongSex for 10 straight days—to focus and be able to stay in the zone without distraction…(the lawn mower in the yard, the construction hammering away next door, the doorbell, an empty refrigerator that needs replenishing, a hankering to go to the mall.”) I have to thank her for coining the term “SongSex” but I am not surprised. After all she is the person who has written a book titled “Confessions of a Serial Songwriter.”
It’s earned a future place on my Kindle.
Legendary singer/songwriter and actor Steve Earle has a music camp in the Catskills. It takes it’s name from one of Steve’s best known songs “Copperhead Road” It’s aptly named “Camp Copperhead.” https://www.campcopperhead.com/artists It’s held at the beautiful “Full Moon Resort, located one half hour west of Woodstock, New York is a year round mountain resort located in the heart of the “Forever Wild” Catskill Forest Preserve.” Steve is joined by another songwriting legend Shawn Colvin and songwriter Anders Osborne. I was lucky to find this BBC podcast describing Steve’s bootcamp. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b081lkl6
We also learn about the hopes and aspirations of the campers.
Nine years ago, in what seems like another life, I went to Richard Thompson’s Frets and Refrains camp at the same “Full Moon Resort.” It was an exciting few days but I wasn’t feeling well and I think I may have got more out of it had I been healthier. Frets and Refrains is now in it’s tenth year and I would recommend it to anyone. They are friendly folk and the “headliners” are impressive. Mr Thompson has a wealth of musical knowledge to impart to his students. https://www.fretsandrefrains.com The co-stars include master guitar player Martin Simpson, singer Sloan Wainwright from the McGarrigle-Wainwright musical family, finger style guitarist and legend Happy Traum, songwriter Eliza Gilkyson and various members of the Thompson clan, sons Teddy Thompson, Jack Covey Thompson and grandson Zac Hobbs. Every one is willing to share their knowledge and skills.
I’ll close for now and will return next month for more on this subject. Still living in the Tower of Song. Stay safe everyone.
