Nature Writing at Kite in our Special Interest Group:

The Wild Side of Words writings

Here is a display of poetry posters that we put together, and an exploration of word blends, including "gerrymandering" and those in Lewis Carroll's poem, "Jabberwocky," at Kite, part of the Kaleidoscope program, this summer. (Only those who are invited through the email-specific sharing feature can see this slideshow).

Kite Poem Posters

Scroll through these poems and pick one that appeals to you. Imagine how you could put together a poster of it, to illustrate the images in it. These poems were selected because they were richly imagistic and are short enough to fit on a poster. The attachment at the bottom needs to be completed by the student artist / interpreter, too. -- Mr. Chamberlain

Your Reflection (See the attachment; to be completed before we share the poem to the class and put it on the wall.)

My poem’s title and author is… "___________________" by ___________________.

I chose the poem because…

(it reminded me of … I liked the way it… I liked these images or metaphors or the theme of…)

I chose to illustrate it this way because…

(Consider how you laid out the poem -- called its layout or arrangement -- the placement of its visuals or illustrations on the poster.)

How do these illustrations help us understand the poem?

(Ideally, the illustrations are not just decorations but help us understand how the poem works, such as by helping us visualize the imagery or how a metaphor works, what we imagine the author wanted us to experience, a new way of viewing the poem, a scene or situation we imagine, etc.)
