I try a lot of different methods to manage my students' behavior. Some of those methods include; approaching students at their desk, taking students aside, and even lunch detention to talk about their actions. Methods by which I maintain order in my classroom are by having a well structured clear set of rules that the students follow. It is important to engage students in meaningful tasks to keep their attention during class.Below you will find my set of rules, as well as a link to a PREZI presentation that I created with the rules for my 7th grade Nutritional Health class.
A picture from the introduction to my rules in my 7th grade Nutritional Health class. I created an activity where the students acted as if they were the "Employee of the Month" at my Restaurant. The student pictured is holding all the props from the rules activity.
7th Grade Nutritional Health Rules
Ms. Hagerl's Classroom Rules
1) Check In
This rule requires students to come into class and pick up their folder from the front of the room. This allows me to get through attendance with ease by checking the remanding folders. The students know that this is the first thing they must do each class period.
2) Be Friendly
Compliment the teacher, greet your peers and always have a smile on your face!
3) Uniform
In class I consider a writing utensil as the students uniform. I explain to them that they would not show up to a game or even to work without their uniform so they should not show up for class without a uniform (pen or pencil). In the beginning when a student asks me for a pencil I send them back to their locker to find one. I mark them tardy but it establishes the rule and shows students that I will not simply hand them a pencil when they ask. If they constantly need a pencil and claim they do not have one in their locker I have the student call home to tell their parent or guardian that they need to purchase writing utensils for school.
4) Read the Overhead
This rule requires students to read the overhead for instructions at the beginning of class. I always provide the students with instructions so they can take ownership of their behavior and be responsible and get right to work.
5) Listen
This rule, I explain to the students, is important to their understanding. If they listen to me and show that they are willing to learn I will always listen to them and will be willing to do anything to help them.
6) Teamwork
I tell the students that we work as a team and if someone on the team decides to not be active or decides to be disruptive they are only hurting the other students' education and understanding.
7) Keep it clean
This rule is all about keeping their language and personal self clean. Students are more apt to get sick when they do not keep things clean when it comes to their personal hygiene. I also do not want to hear vulgar language as well as hurtful language about other students.
8) Try new things
Just because a student does not like something or decides they will not do an activity it is not acceptable in my classroom. They must always attempt the activity or assignment.
9) Bonus Points
In order to obtain bonus students must come to class ready to learn and be willing to have a good time. There will be many times to obtain points but only the willing and ready will be called upon.
10) Check Out
When checking out students must return folder to the correct basket and number assigned to them. They must clean up after themselves and leave with a positive attitude.
