GA NOTES:
--It could be tree or shrub, but has a tendency to branch out low, like a shrub. This makes it questionable as a tree along the side yard, because it would block visibility. This would be bad for security reasons. It seems to more naturally go like a shrub. They can be planted much closer together as shrub, which seems like it would increase yield, as well as making it lower + easier to harvest.
RainTree
The most recent blight immune release from OSU. It is a late pollinator for Jefferson which has a long bloom period. Theta will increase yields for Jefferson especially when used with other Jefferson pollinators such as Gem, Hall's Giant, Yamhill or Gamma. Theta also produces small to medium sized nuts.
Hazel is an attractive native shrub or small tree. Hazel has shiny, almost
metallic bark, long catkins in spring
and large, rounded green leaves which turn bright yellow in autumn. Considered by the Celts to be the plant of knowledge, it produces a crop of edible hazelnuts, and was traditionally coppiced (cut to the ground on a regualr basis) to produce 'rods' or poles, and also for charcoal production. Plant it as an understorey in a woodland, in a mixed hedgerow or in a grove in sun or in shade. It prefers alkaline soil, so not suitable for peaty or boggy areas. Bare root plants 60 - 90 cms tall. Available between November and March
GeneticFacts ‘Red Dragon’ is being released for its ornamental value rather than nut production. ‘Red Dragon’ sets a few nuts that are small, slightly long and compressed. The nuts are borne in clusters of one or two in husks equal in length to the nuts.
