Spigot thru tank wall (or poly bucket...whatever). This wouldnt work for heavyduty thing like a full rain barrel or IBC tote, but is good for small arrangements. It took me many expensive trial+error attempts before figuring out such a simple, cheap, easy setup. Top of pix shows it all put together, Minus the wall. Bottom shows the individual components:
3/28/14---setup tank + raft--no fish
about (20) 2" net cups w/hydroClay (Hydroton) w/ a split cottonball to hold seeds abt 2/ea of broccoli + mesclun w/ (2) 3" pots for squash. Tank is a 20gal tote, 40gal airpump & round bubbler---no fish yet.
3/30--2 little broc's.
4/5--(4) brocs--no sign on the others yet, including mesclun

for about 5 min every 2hrs or so, then drains out the drain, & stays empty for 1 1/2hr or so, before the pump turns on again.

When the water rises to overflow, it just runs into the tank/tray below. It can just drain from there into fish tank below, but if necessary to direct the water to the fish tank, a hose can be attached.
---Drain--
-----w/Spigot arrangement in center column($6.90) below the growbed to drain into the tank below, or another growbed. The drain rate can be adjusted by varying how open the spigot is. This will allow the water to come in much faster than it is going out, which makes the level rise.
