Saturday 24 July 1999:

Pam Reid, tombstone representative, informs the group that she will be

going on vacation from July 27 to Aug 2 and will be unavailable during

that time.

One of the other board members tells her to have a good time.

Jim Powell, Election Committee chair, posts a message to the group

reminding them that the election ends in one week. He describes a

procedure by which members who should have gotten ballots but did not can

vote by sending their ballots directly to their EC rep, using a code

number assigned by their SC. [this note is addressed to SCs and ASCs, but

also appeared on a number of other project lists.]

Election Update: The election closes July 31. Please, if you have not

received a ballot and should have, contact your SC without delay, so that

you may vote using the procedure described in Mr. Powell's email.

Two Is Twice As Good As One Corner: Genconnect at Root$web appears to be

preparing to open its own "Cemetery Project". For a sneak peak, see here:

http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/mockups/cemetery/

Movin' On Up Corner: Tim "Right Hand of God" Pierce, Root$web employee and

not infrequent visitor to USGW project mailing lists, has apparently

received a new job title. He now signs himself "RootsWeb.com lead system

admonsterator and Chief Hacking Officer".

"I hold it that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing, and as

necessary in the political world as storms are in the physical.

Unsuccessful rebellions, indeed, generally establish the encroachments on

the rights of the people, which have produced them. An observation of this

truth should render honest republican governors so mild in their

punishment of rebellions, as not to discourage them too much. It is

medicine necessary for the sound health of government."

Election Update: From a message posted to several project lists earlier

today, Board Secretary Bill Oliver fulfills the requirements of motion

99-21, stating "As Directed in Motion 99-21 - [snip motion text] The

Secretary casts one affirmative vote for the position of NW/Plains Region

CC Representative for Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman and one affirmative vote

for the position of SE/Mid-Atlantic Region CC Representative for Teri

Pettit." Congrats to the new Board members!

Full Disclosure Corner: We notice the Archives has added the following

notice to the search engine page: "Rootsweb has been providing free

space, technology, and staff time for over three years to make the

Archives and this search engine possible. By clicking on any "finds" in

your search, you will be given the option to receive advertising banners

on the search pages, or to not receive them."

Working For A Living Corner: According to the latest RootsWeb Review,

USGW's own Megan Zurawicz is now a Rootsweb staffer. She's helping out

with the new non-genealogy hobby areas.

And, this just in from An Intriguing Stranger who wishes to remain

anonymous, "Linda Lewis has become a paid Rootsweb Employee recently and

is involved in their commercial projects." [what say you, Linda? Oddly

enough, my mail to you bounces.]

Damage Control Corner: Also in the new RWR is a brief item written in

response to "many concerned letters from readers about putting data on

the Internet"; Root$web has issued a "pledge" to its users. Along with

promising not to sell email or regular mail addresses of its users,

Rootsweb also pledges that it "will neither sell nor charge for access to

your genealogical information (for example, your posts to RootsWeb mailing

lists or GenConnect boards, your Web pages hosted at RootsWeb, and any

datasets you have donated to the USGenWeb Archives) without your

permission."

We got game....its Your Daily Board Show!

Thursday 29 July 1999:

The NC posts a message received from a satisfied customer thanking the

USGenWeb Project for helping her document her heritage. She says, "I

cannot begin to thank this group for what they do for genealogist. I have

tried for 25 years to prove my Cherokee Indian heritage, and through this

sight:http://www.usgenweb.com I have made contact with an individual that

sent me documents to prove my heritage. Thank you, Thank you."

Election Update: Today is the last day to vote. Just Do It!

Publicity Hound Corner: We've been privately informed that the Board has

acted positively on the suggestion to put USGenWeb banners in the

noncommercial banner rotation on RootsWeb. If you want to see one you can

go here: http://surhelp-bin.rootsweb.com/srchsite.pl?site=CIRCUIT and hit

reload until it pops up [be patient; its probably in random rotation, so

it make a few clicks to pull it]. This particular url was picked at

random; the banner should show up on any page that has banners and is not

reserved for corporate sponsorship. Its quite a nice banner. Although it

won't get the heavy exposure the banners in the commercial rotation get,

it should help to increase the visibility of the Project.

A User Scorned Corner: We hear that another complaint against Root$web's

business practices has been filed with the Federal Trade Commission. This

one involves RW's refusal to removed copyrighted information from its

archives at the repeated request of the copyright holder.

Rolling In It Corner: New ad sponsor seen at Root$web: Uproar.com,

"Your Online Gameshow Network". Its more or less another one of those

places that harvests info for advertisers. This one gives away prizes and

has games you can play, though, so its kinda amusing. According to their

privacy policy "some material may not be intended for children", so keep

the kiddies away from the keyboard.

"Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish

the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost."
