Prowler was my “Millennium kitty,” born around the start of January 2001. I found her outside in April of that year while living at Enchanted Trails RV Park in Albuquerque. Took her to the vet, got her shots, and from that moment on, she became one of the best cats I’ve ever had.
She was smart, loyal, and independent. She used the litter box faithfully — even when I wasn’t the most diligent about cleaning it. She preferred dry food, came when called by name, and didn’t need the usual “kitty kitty kitty” coaxing. When someone came to the door, she was always there to greet them. That was Prowler — curious, social, and full of quiet charm.
Sadly, she had to be put to sleep on January 18, 2011 due to a back injury that had plagued her since September 2009. For a while, it looked like she was healing — she was using her litter box again, even playing with the laser pointer. But around January 14, things took a turn. She lost control of her bladder completely and began to lose strength in her back legs and tail. The vet had warned me this could happen. After speaking with Animal Humane, I made the heartbreaking decision not to let her suffer through it again.
It was the first time I’d ever had to make that kind of call. It was incredibly difficult. I still miss her.
Prowler wasn’t just a cat — she was a friend, a greeter, a quiet comfort in the house. And though she’s gone, her memory still prowls the corners of my heart.
The first two photos were taken in 2004.
This photo and the one below were taken at my Brentwood Gardens apartment in Albuquerque, NM.
The day after this picture was taken, January 17, 2011, I took Prowler to the vet for the very last time. One of her favorite foods was peanut butter and I couldn't even interest her in this. I do have another cat that looks very similar to her now named Amber. She's a cutie, too...but of course, totally different personality. But she loves me just as much as Prowler did.
