I’ve known Dave for… well, let’s just say it feels like since the dawn of time. Realistically, we first met around 1989 and became roommates in 1991. He’s the one who nudged me into the world of amateur radio — something I’d been meaning to explore for decades. Dave holds an “Extra” ticket (that’s ham-speak for Extra Class license), and thanks to his encouragement, I finally got my Technician’s license on August 20, 2005. I followed that up with my General Class in April 2007 and, after a long pause, earned my Extra Class in March 2021. So thanks, Dave — for introducing me to a hobby that’s great fun and not-so-great for the wallet!
Dave and Jane tied the knot in July 1999, and I had the honor of being best man at their wedding. I drove 1,500 miles from Albuquerque to Coldwater, Ohio just to be there. These days, I live only 35 miles away, and we talk on the phone pretty regularly.
Jane retired in early 2010 and is thoroughly enjoying the perks of not working. Dave followed suit in November 2014 and has since embraced the “lazy bum” lifestyle with gusto. He’s deep into ham radio and has developed a fascination with backpacking-style camp stoves — always on the hunt for the perfect one.
The photos below were taken in October 2005 during one of my trips from Albuquerque to Ohio. At the time, I had no idea I’d eventually settle in Indiana. In one of the photos, you’ll see Tim and CJ — both gone far too soon. Tim passed at 55, and Claudia (CJ) at just 41. I miss them both deeply.
Dave standing in front of his house. He's pretty much confined to a wheelchair now. May 14, 2003.
Tim and CJ (Claudia)...may they both rest in peace. Standing is mom, Jane during a garage sale (in a REAL garage!!!) on May 14, 2003
This is Dave again...taken the same time, same place, same garage sale on May 14, 2003.
Here are Dave and Jane together on July 20, 2024. I'll work on getting even more photos. I do have some but they're older than this one.
