Carol S. is Gene M.’s sister, and I’ve known her since 1977. She’s one of those rare people who’s not just a good friend — she’s family in every way that matters. Carol is a genuinely kind soul, a fantastic cook, and someone I’ve always felt close to. As I mention on Gene’s page, she and I (along with what’s left of the family) are as close as kin, even if we weren’t born into it.
For years, I made regular trips to Phoenix — three or four times a year — to visit Carol and the family and to stop by a local wholesaler for some special deals, but the real draw was the connection and camaraderie.
Sadly, Carol’s father, Tom, passed away in October 2005 after battling heart disease. He was a good man and is deeply missed. Her mother, Alice, passed on March 13, 2020, just shy of her 93rd birthday. Gene passed away on June 14, 2022, and her sister Shirley followed in 2024.
Carol is now the last of her immediate family, and with her, the Manton name reaches its final chapter. Thankfully, she has two sons — James and Jared — so the bloodline continues in part.
Carol remains a cherished friend, and I’m grateful for the decades of memories we’ve shared.
