Curriculum Guide

The Curriculum Guide is an academic guide or catalog of course offerings, course descriptions and other resources. It also includes the graduation requirements and an explanation of *academic weights and GPA grade scale. Curriculum Guides vary by academic school year and graduating class.

As you work to create your schedule and plan for your high school experience, here are some important terms you should know.

Core Courses (English, Math, Science, Social Studies)

These courses will be rolled over to the next core level for the next school year in Infinite Campus according to teacher recommendation based on grade and work ethic. Although discouraged, changes between traditional and honors can only be made with parent approval. Current students and parents will be able to access which core courses have been recommended on the student Infinite Campus Portal during registration time (usually during the month of March).

Elective Courses

Elective courses are classes that a student can take which are not specifically required to graduate. They are generally seen as the opposite of core requirements, which are classes that all students must take. Elective courses give students the chance to take classes outside of a prescribed plan of coursework. This lets students pursue other interests they may have, giving them a more "well-rounded" education. These electives also let students find subjects that might interest them and change the direction they wish to take with their education. A student who takes an elective class in drafting, for example, might discover a love of design and engineering that leads to a career he or she might not otherwise have found. Elective classes are not required for graduation but may be required to complete a specific career pathway.

Elective courses are requests only. Requests are highly considered; however, due to scheduling conflicts, requests are not guaranteed. Preference for class slots will be given based on career pathways.

All information and procedures will be posted on Schoology, GCTV, and the school email announcements. SOAR teachers will advise students.

February (Career Pathway Education Month)

CTE teachers - Discuss pathway showcase dates and pathways with students in class.
Pathway Showcase video will be shown in classes and on GCTV, as well as at the middle school.
Pathway Showcase video will also be linked to the website and the curriculum guide.
Middle school will share pathway information with students in preparation for upcoming course requests.
Application available for students requesting to take a course that requires an application for admission.

March (Course Registration/Pre-Scheduling Month)

Details by grade level

Incoming 9th graders (advisor/advisee style) Scheduling Window March 6th -22nd

March 6th: 8th graders will visit GCHS for a tour and presentation by Ms Rodgers/Ms Wright. A guided tour will be provided for students to gain an awareness of the general locations at GCHS. CTE Pathway Video links as well as the presentation will be available on the GC Counselor Website.
March 7th: 8th Grade parent presentation in GC Library regarding course requests
March 8th: 8th graders will tour the Mayfield/Graves County Area Technical Center (ATC).
March 11th & March 18th 3:30-6:00 pm: CTE Pathway Showcase in the Commons during registration nights.
March 11th & March 18th 3:30-6:00 pm: Registration nights - Assigned Soar Teachers will assist students and parents with information to request courses in IC.

Advisors will be given a roster with student contact information for registration meeting planning.
Middle school teachers will make individual course recommendations which will be used in decision making with students/parents.
All course request forms with completed requests must be submitted to Ms Rodgers by March 22nd.

Incoming 10th, 11th, & 12th graders

March 11-22: IC Request Registration Window - All Students will be able to register elective courses in Infinite Campus. SOAR teachers will assist with IC course requests and will collect request sheets.
March 1: Counselors will begin visiting Freshman Seminar classes & English classes to discuss the next year (review of graduation requirements, career pathways, graduates of distinction, IC instructions, course registration, and scheduling). Paperwork will be handed out at this time.
March 11 & 18: Pathway Showcase 3:30-6:00 pm / Counselors will be available in the library 4-6 to answer any questions.
March 19: Dual Credit Parent/Student Meeting in PAC at 6:00 p.m. (Juniors and Seniors)
March 25: Dual Credit students scheduling during the school day for 2024 Fall classes (Juniors and Seniors)
