School counselors are specially trained professionals charged with helping students and their families make important academic and personal decisions. Counselors assist students in finding solutions to problems. Counselors listen sometimes when nobody else can or will. Counselors help find the answers to confusing questions such as what choices students should take in school, what career might be right and how to get into a college or university. Counselors offer friendship, support and understanding.
Mental health counselors are available for more in depth or long term counseling. Mental health counselors see their clients on a scheduled basis. Contact your school counselor for a referral.
Schools can support the feeling of safety among students by providing students resources to:
· acknowledge their emotions
· increase their resilience and coping skills
· identify trusted adults to whom they can reach out should they find themselves in crisis
All students are entitled to receive the benefits of the school counseling program that is developmental in nature, preventived in design, and comprehensive in scope. As an integral part of the total educational program, school counselors ensure equity and access to services so that every student is challenged and supported to achieve his/her highest potential. The goal is to enable all student to achieve success in school and to develop into contributing members of society.
