of Elias Galarno
My grandparents were John and Edna (Galarno) Kahl, my great-grandparents were Walter P. Galarno and Eva (Frederick) Galarno and my great-great grandparents were Elias and Sarah Galarno, the main subjects of this page.
The Galarnos were sometimes listed as French-Canadian, English-Canadian and of Indian ancestry on certain Government Censuses. According to the 1910 State of Michigan Census for Menominee County in Meyer Township, it was Canada English, usually referring to Ontario, Canada.
Elias Galarno was born sometime between 1816 and 1818 in Canada and died February 19th, 1883, at age 67. Sarah Ann Parker predeceased Elias in 1871. Elias and his sons Isaac and Joseph were soldiers in the Civil War. Elias was a Private of Company H, 3rd Regiment Michigan Calvary. He enrolled September 10, 1861 at Port Huron and was discharged 1866. Later he applied for disability. Elias' son Joseph was in the 5th Infantry Company G and was killed May 14, 1864.

Elias married his second wife Catharine Elz. Lasher (about March 17, 1872, in St. Clair, Michigan). Catharine E. Galarno died Feb 7, 1920 in New York. This couple had one child together; Claudestine Desta.
