J. Galerno Succumbs, Driver Claims Victim Stepped Into Path Of Car Inquiry Into Cause Of Windsorite's Death Is Set For Friday (from WindsorStar 1935)

Five hours after he was struck down by an auto yesterday afternoon, James Galerno, 79 years old, of 734 Chatham Street East was dead in Hotel Dieu. He passed away from the effects of a skull fracture, without regaining consciousness. (read full story) also available is this link the an online archive of the article.

James was born in Comber, Ontario area in 1855 and lived between Comber and Rochester most of his life. He was a farmer when he married Marie Virginie Sauvé in 1876 in Pointe-aux-Roches, about 10km from Comber on Lake St.Clair. In a prior ceremony to the marriage, James was baptized into the Catholic Church. It would have been improbable that Virginie, a Roman Catholic from Quebec, would have married him otherwise. His parents were Benjamin Galerno and Elizabeth Woodford.

Virginie Sauvé was born in the Soulanges area of Quebec, about 15 minutes by car across the Ontario/Quebec border following the 401 Highway. The date of birth on her tombstone conflicts with certain documents; marriage register (b1857) and church records at St.Polycarpe also show (b1857) (see documents below). Her parents were Jean-Baptiste Sauvé and Marie-Louise Souchereau, both of the same area. She passed away in 1941 (obit below).

This couple had 10 children, some of which (4 of 10) died young. It would be an omen to the hardships that would seemingly follow. This is not a story handed down from generation to generation but an observation made during the genealogical process.

Elizabeth Louise (b1877, d1906), moved to US
