GSS 2016

About the GSS 2016

Thank you to all the organizers and participants! The FGSO is organizing a GSS reflection meeting to discuss what went well, what can be improved, and what the event will look like in the future. Check out the news post for details.

Each year the Forestry, Fisheries, & Geomatics grad students put together a Graduate Student Symposium (GSS). This fun event is an opportunity for grads to present their research in front of peers, faculty, and alum.

The 2-day symposium is held jointly with students from the Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences program with Forestry and Geomatics students presenting on the 17th and Fisheries presentations on the 16th. A joint poster session between the Fisheries and Forestry and Geomatics programs will take place the evening of the 16th.

"Plant Protection and Quarantine and forest pests: weighing science and program management"

First, Dr. Kopper will provide a brief background on PPQ and what it does, specifically as it relates to forest health. Second, the federal CAPS program will be described and what it supports: a big-picture overview of the program and how science supports it. Third, how program management uses science and other factors to make decisions leading into a forest pest example. The third section will be open-ended, to allow for discussion regarding what a successful national pest-prevention program looks like. Finally, Dr. Kopper will sprinkle his talk with advice on what components should applications for Farm Bill support have, so you can get your research program funded.
