Reseach Procedures:
Research procedures in Norway follow the pattern of most Scandinavian countries. Check for emigration records [1870-1920] on the Digital archives which will usually give the place of birth or last residence; check for the birth records of the person of interest; gather the births of his brothers and sisters, check the confirmation records for each, look for marriage of parents, deaths of all. Extract the names of all witnesses which will be helpful in identifying cousin relationships. Norway also has farm histories. [Denmark has military levying rolls and Sweden has household examinations lists].
Online Church Records
Digital Archives of Norway. Online. Choose "English" and click on the words "Digitized Parish Registers." Web address: www.arkivverket.no/digitalarkivet. The parish usually has a "head" or "mother" parish and then various branches are formed. Choose the "mother" parish first and if the entry isn't found, choose the branch parishes. Two sets of records were kept. One by the parish minister and a copy by the clerk. Choose the minister's copy first. Some like to obtain both records as one may have additional information.
Online Emigration Records
These are available at the digital archives listed above. They include the years 1870 to 1920.
Census Records
Census records are being indexed in an ongoing project at: http://www.rhd.uit.no/indexeng.html
1865: A royal decree issued October 22, 1865, declared a national, general census in Norway. The collection of the census began January 8, 1966. It was to include those present between 31 December 1865 and 1 January 1866. The entire Norwegian population was to be included. Those Norwegians who were absent due to travel or similar reasons were to be registered at their usual address of residence. Visitors there temporarily were to be excluded from the census.
Census years for Norway: 1801, 1865, 1875, 1900, 1910.
Printing Online Records
To print records from Norwegian digital records always choose the options at the top of the pages either pdf1 [1-page document] or pdf2 [2-page document]. If the entry is on a 2-page document, it is well to change the printer to 11 x 17 paper and the image will be larger. You may save to a flash drive.
