Many French Civil Registration records are now online. Many are also available in the Family History Library on microfilm. Civil Registration indexes on microfilm for Moselle in the Family History Library catalog
Index to civil registration for some communes is available at: www.webadminisstres.net. Search on the commune you desire, then click on the picture of the birth, marriage or death. If the commune has been indexed, the actual document will be shown. There is a 100 year limit on births, 25 years on deaths.
French Civil Registration Documents
Marriage document contains the following parts:
Introduction by Civil official: Date, time and location (commune, canton, arrondissement and département) as written by the officer recording the event. Full name and title of the official. (Unless related to the couple, the introduction has little significance).
Groom: Full name, profession, residence, whether or not he is living with his parents; whether or not he is of the age of majority, his date and place of birth, the full names of his parents, their professions and whether they are living or deceased. If a parent is deceased, the date and place of death may be given. Whether or not a parents is present will be stated and if not, why not. Whether or not the parents give their consent to the marriage will also be stated.
Bride: The same information will be given for the bride.
Banns: The dates and location of the posting of the banns and whether or not that resulted in anyone opposing the marriage.
Marriage Contract: If there was a marriage contract, a statement regarding it may be included.
Civil Code: Confirmation that the marriage section of the Civil Code was read to the couple and that they agreed to it, both verbally and by signing the register, and that they were thus married, their names being given again.
Witnesses: Names, ages, professions, addresses and relationship of the witnesses to the couple.
Signatures: Signatures or marks of all those named: the officer, the couple, their parents or guardians, and the witnesses.
