Tax records in the early period came in many forms: Bede, Schätzung, die Steuer, etc. Some of these tax lists have been preserved and can be found on microfilm and in book form in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Some early tax lists in their collection include:
Tax Records
The Germanic area in the 1500s consisted of Imperial Circles and small self-contained villages and market towns. Forests, rivers, marshes, and hills often separated one region from another. It was a patchwork of jurisdictions controlled by estate owners, religious entities, noblemen, and their agents. Because of this decentralization of laws, rights, and powers, records of the population can be very diverse. In this early time period records of our ancestors of any genealogical significance will be found in the three "t's": taxes, tithes, and tolls.
