Place Search
Step 1: Find the place name of interest in Lenius: Genealogical Gazetteer of Galicia. Find the general area on the maps in this book.
Step 2. Check the 1939 gazetteer of Poland to see if the place had a parish.
Step 3: Find the place on a detailed map. Use the online maps on pilot.pl [also called http://mapa.szukacz.pl]. These maps will provide the modern name of the province such as: Malopolskie, etc.
For example: Do a search for the place name "Lanckorona" Click on "Pokaz" [show]. Press "Wyczysz" to clear the entry. Several places with this name will come up. When you press the work "Wybierz", it will make a circle on the map where the place is located. When you hover over the circle the place name will appear giving you the name of the "Wojewodztwo".

Colonization of Germans:
Schneider, Ludwig. Das Kolonisationswerk Josefs II. in Galizien. [The Settlement Activities of (Austrian Emperor) Joseph II in Galicia]. Verlag von S. Hirzel, 1939. [This book deals with the settlement of Germans in Galicia, beginning in the 1780's, after this area had come under Austrian rule pursuant to the First Partition of Poland in 1772. It became part of Poland again after WWI and was then diivided between Poland and Ukraine (formerly Soviet Union) since WW II. A substantial majority of the Germans settled in Eastern Galicia, now part of Western Ukraine, near Lemberg (Lwów in Polish; L'vov in Ukrainian]
