Registry of Jewish Holocaust Survivors [Benjamin and Vladka Meed]. [FHL 973 F2mbr vols. 1-4]. This book is based on thousands of registration forms entered into the database to document the lives of survivors who came to the U.S. after WWII. It was created to help Holocaust survivors search for relatives and friends. Vols. 1-2 contain an alphabetical list of names of survivors and is cross-referenced to all names provided on the registration form, including those used before and during the war. Vol. 3 lists survivors by birthplace and residence before WWII. Towns are listed alphabetically regardless of country. Vol. 4 lists survivors by their location during the war. All places of residence as listed on the forms have been included. The book is especially helpful to determine the former birth name of an individual. Beginning in 1788, Jews were required to keep records of births, marriages, and deaths in Catholic records. Jewish records for the entire Czech Republic are kept in the National Archives in Prague and are now online at: www.badatelna.eu/fond/1073 . To use this site: (1) Check for "Rejstriky" [Records]. (2). Find the place Radenim [Choose Record]: N=births; O=marriages; Z=Deaths. (3) click on Reprodukce 1939-1949 no records. Records will be in German.

Many Jews departed Europe using the port of Hamburg, Germany. The Hamburg Passenger Lists have been indexed on Ancestry.com$. These lists often identify the last residence or place of origin of Jewish individuals.

New York City

The Italian Genealogical Group has a index to many New York City records. It includes indexes to Naturalization records, births, marriages, and deaths in New York City and suburbs. Many Jewish individuals are included in this database. When the naturalization is found, write down the file number and specified court, then search online in the Family History Library catalog or FamilySearch Historical records online to locate the actual petition for naturalization to find additional information about the immigrant. Many naturalization records and indexes can also be found on Ancestry.com or Fold3 databases. When you have found a vital record in the index, search the Family History Library catalog to locate the original record.

Search the indexes on Ancestry.com to search the Blitzstein, Rosenbaum, and Lipshutz People's Banks. These banks were commercial enterprises, started mainly by established German Jews, as a place where recent immigrants could save money and arrange to purchase steamship tickets to bring their families to the United States. The original lists which have been filmed by the Family History Library can then be searched to locate the entries as given in the index.
