What Is Poetry ?

Poetry should be a deep delight, which you would enjoy as you enjoy a day in spring, when the sun is rising, the birds are singing, and the first flowers of the year are discovered along the edge of the woods. You must not think of it as a school subject about which you will be questioned one day; you must not even think of it as "literature" which is an ugly word invented by schoolmasters.

Poetry is like the bird's song, but since it is sung by a human being, it has more meaning, and that meaning is given in words. But the words which the poet finds – and he finds them like flowers in his path: he does not look for them – these words are special words. Some of them are sweetly musical, words that are thrilling to the tongue as we utter them; others are magical words that fill the mind with wonder. Music and magic are both present in the best poems, and together they give us the particular delight of poetry.

"L'utilité de la géométrie consiste à éclairer l'intelligence de celui qui cultive cette science et à lui donner l'habitude de penser avec justesse. En effet, toutes les démonstrations de la géométrie se distinguent par la clarté de leur arrangement et par l'évidence de leur ordre systématique. Cet ordre et cet arrangement empêchent toute erreur de se glisser dans les raisonnements ; aussi l'esprit des personnes qui s'occupent de cette science est-il peu exposé à se tromper, et leur intelligence se développe en suivant cette voie. On prétend même que les paroles suivantes se trouvaient écrites sur la porte de Platon : « Que nul n'entre dans notre demeure s'il n'est géomètre. » De même, nos professeurs disaient : « L'élude de la géométrie est pour l'esprit ce que l'emploi du savon est pour les vêtements ; elle en enlève les souillures et fait disparaître les taches. » Cela tient à l'arrangement et à l'ordre systématique de cette science, ainsi que nous venons de le faire observer. Ibn Khaldun says, in Al-muqaddima, on geometry :

« It should be known that geometry enlightens the intellect and sets one's mind right. All its proofs are very clear and orderly. It is hardly possible for errors to enter into geometrical reasoning, because it is well arranged and orderly. Thus, the mind that constantly applies itself to geometry is not likely to fall into error. In this convenient way, the person who knows geometry acquires intelligence. It has been assumed that the following statement was written upon Plato's door: "No one who is not a geometrician may enter our house."

Our teachers used to say that one's application to geometry does to the mind what soap does to a garment. It washes off stains and cleanses it of grease and dirt. The reason for this is that geometry is well arranged and orderly, as we have mentioned. »
