John D. Burgess Recital

John D. Burgess, Champion Piper.

Adelaide Recital, 1983, at The Parks.

The band was invited to provide a couple of brackets of entertainment during the evening, and it was pleasing to get the opportunity to play before a knowledgeable crowd for a change.

It was good to see a piper of this calibre on the stage in Adelaide, and it certainly evoked memories for myself of a competition performance I witnessed when he and I were young boys at the Braemar Gathering, in the late 1940's. I can't remember his March or Strathspey, but his Reel was "Pretty Marion", and it was simply outstanding. If ever there was a child prodigy in the piping world, he was it .... I remember being absolutely awestruck by his ability at the time.

The band played well from our extensive repertoire, and our contribution was well received by the crowd. Also, Alan Dodds provided an excellent solo recital.
