Mount Barker Highland Gathering - 1981
This was a scorcher of a day, hitting 43oC at the peak, and needless to say it was hard to enjoy playing pipes, particularly when the Quickstep course was a mandatory event. It is a nightmare trying to keep pipes sounding reasonable under such conditions.
We also played several Mini-bands, but I have no record of the results. However, Jim Cottnam competed in one of these bands as a Bass Drummer for the first time.
Our Pipers:
Angus Massie (sen), Alan Dodds, Angus Massie (jun), Peter Cameron, Stewart Kearney, Liam Craig, Craig McAinsh, Andrew Saj, Peter Whitehead, Andrew MacArthur.
Our Drummers:
Sides - Tony Krelle, Matthew Fielder, Stephen Dunn. Bass - Michael Dunn, Robert Cottnam, Peter Crookes. Drum Major - Marshal Hamon.
Our tunes:
Quickstep - Major MacLennan.
Selection - Drunken Piper.
Medley - Piper O' Dundee, Paddy's Leather Breeches, Come by the Hills, The Waterhole, Captain Horne, O'er the Bows to Ballindalloch, Miss Girdle, De'il Amang the Tailors, Shoals of Herring.
Results:
Second place overall in Grade III - First in piping.
Exhausted at the completion of the Quickstep course. We had removed our ties in deference to the 43oC heat !!!
