Working with children requires a harmonious relationship between everyone in the studio. Even experienced child actors have a limited attention span, and the dialogue mixer must be ready to record all takes - even practice ones - to ensure capturing the best one.
Children learn very quickly and an intermediate stage of development does not seem to exist. Hence, child actors tend to fall into two categories: pros and complete beginners. The pros need very little guidance from the artistic director and the session will go quickly and smoothly; they often get into the emotional state of a scene more spontaneously than adults. It is the complete beginners that require everyone in the studio to work together and to provide lots of encouragement. This should be taken into account when scheduling a session with children, with more time allotted than for an adult with the same number of lines of dialogue. For practicality, the parts of children are often dubbed by women.
