SHORT DESCRIPTION
The module is compulsory course for students of the first level of study, Bachelor degree, of the "Wood Processing Engineering" study program, taking into consideration that sawing of logs is a main process which stands in the base of the wood processing structure.
23 hours of lectures form the background for 22 hours of seminars, project work and one-day industrial trip, which are used to develop and train the knowledge from the lectures and recommended literature through counting the examples, in order to understand the nature of sawmill and production of sawn timber.
During the course the student will acquire fundamental knowledge about the production of sawn wood and concepts of sawmill planning. Classification’s criteria for grading of logs and sawn lumber are studied referring to ISO and EN standards. The individual items of equipments will be examined and described in the context of the production system, as well as the interrelation between the various machine centers with respect to operational characteristics, production capacities, raw material storage requirements and effects on product.
The main objective of the course is to prepare students to manage various duties and responsibilities during lumber manufacturing activity.
At the end of the course the student should be able:
· to measure and grade the logs and sawn wood according to EN standards;
· to figure operations and to organize the activity in all sectors of a sawmill;
· to use and maintain the sawmill equipments;
· to calculate and to readjust working parameters of equipments according to working intensity;
· to choose appropriate technology and sawing patterns;
· to develop technological schemes and to read technology and engineering drawings;
· to calculate yield and conversion factors;
· to plan a modern sawmill.
