Behind the Badge in River City: A Portland Police Memoir

Reviews...

Behind the Badge in River City: A Portland Police memoir, is a fascinating first-hand account of the Portland Police Department during the gritty 60s and 70s. DuPay's compassionate and insightful book paints compelling-and sometimes disturbing- portraits of a cop, a police department and a city.

~Brian Lindstrom, Renowned Portland film maker and director of Alien Boy: The Life and Death of James Chasse,

Don DuPay takes his reader to a Portland few of us would recognize in his fascinating and gritty "Behind the Badge in River City: A Portland Police Memoir." Its the ultimate ride along; you follow him to the darkest reaches of the city where vice is nice and truth has consequences. Strap yourself in, its going to be a bumpy ride!

Kathy Smith, Portland Broadcast Journalist, anchorwoman at KGW, and KATU, March 5, 2016

I knew Don - the author and I worked for the same enforcement agency - and he sure tells it like it was.

~ Bob Peschka, retired Detective Lieutenant with Portland Police Bureau, April 12, 2015

This book is not only historically accurate it is also extremely personal. DuPay shows us what it was like to be a cop at a particular time in this particular city. It is a rare achievement. Mr. DuPay's voice is wonderful as he tells his story. I think it should be turned into a TV show.

~JD Chandler, author of Murder and Scandal in Prohibition Portland; Sex, Vice and Misdeeds in Mayor Baker's Reign, April 27, 2015

A fine book, accessible and touching as it follows Don DuPay's career arc. It traces the author's beginnings as a newly minted Portland Police officer. Along the way see how DuPay's career was a lot like everyone's: occasional exciting moments punctuated by long pauses, paperwork and office politics. Throughout the vignettes that form the structure of "Behind the Badge" it's clear DuPay serves honorably and well. Some of the events portrayed (I'll let you discover them) are plainly disturbing and pulse with verisimilitude. They had a cumulative effect on this good cop. That and DuPay's reluctance to bend to expedience limited his career prospects within the Bureau. The Portland Police Bureau performs a necessary public safety function. It was never easy on either side of that thin blue line. "Behind the Badge in River City: A Portland Police Memoir" makes that clear. This is a valuable historical document from a man who lived through the events. Buy this book. It's the best way to honor Don DuPay's 17 year career.

~Mark Sanchez, journalist with KOIN, May 20, 2015

This is a book that you won't want to put down (but if you must, you can, as each chapter is complete unto itself). A book filled with the history of the Portland Police Bureau from the 1960s into the 1970s. DuPay's steady, articulate, honest voice fills his memoir of his time on the police force with the integrity of the good cop he was as he maneuvered his way through just about every despicable or heart breaking situation imaginable for one in that role. And he has a soft spot for dogs. No cats are allowed on the tavern cutting board, though; that will bring the Board of Health. This is a very good read that sheds light on the inner workings, at that time, of an agency we all depend heavily upon, officers we hope we can trust. The reader can trust Don DuPay to tell good stories very well, with great command of language, of scene. This is a wonderful read. I love knowing more about Portland. This shows the truth of our police department and includes appalling corruption and crime both inside and outside the force, but also provides ample heroes and humor.

~Susan Reese, Professor of English, Portland State University, June 24, 2015

This is a fine book, detailing the sides of police work unseen by the public, and the bravery of men and women who have to see the terrible events in the lives of those they do their best to protect. It also show the tragedies that officers witness among their own departments and among colleagues. I spent just under 14 years on the job as an officer in SC, and this book is one of the most realistic and gritty depictions of police work seen from the officer's point of view. The parallels from Detective DuPay's book and what I encountered in my work are striking. A good read, I recommend it to all. I was privileged to proofread the ore-publication copy of the book, and I was thoroughly engrossed in it.
