Description
Educator demonstrates genuine caring and respect for students. Students exhibit respect for Educator as an individual, beyond that for the role of instructor. A strong educator-student rapport is obvious.
Rationale
Respect for All Persons, as one of our guiding Lasallian Core Principles is paramount and I am entrusted with providing witness to that particular principle by modeling appropriate behavior. Each student is treated fairly and respectfully. No student has to earn my respect; each student entrusted to my care is endowed with respect from the moment they were conceived. Respect comes from Latin which means “to see again.”
The etymology of the word reminds us that acting on this Lasallian Core Principle of Respect for All Persons means that we see one another as made God’s image and likeness. And, if each person is indeed made in the image and likeness of God, then fundamentally we are brothers and sisters to one another. How should we treat a brother or a sister in the classroom, on the field, in the court, or on the stage?
Additionally, it was also important for me to see our students in action. In order to build these relationships, I attended several sporting events, the annual theater production, and I made sure to visit several churches where I knew students were regular attendees. Hopefully, my presence at these places helped my students to know that I care about their holistic well being.
