Potions & Tea
Antivenom is a potion which cures the drinker of any poisons they may be suffering from. Anti-venom is made from basil, fennel and ground arachnid. It must be brewed by a witch in order to be effective. The potency of anti-venom is proportional to the brewing bonus of the witch who brewed it; a more potent antivenom potion requires the drinker to imbibe less in order to cure oneself.
Non-poisonous spiders can be caught at Chronides Farmsted and in the chimney of Granny Weatherwax's cottage. (syntax: 'catch' spider). Ground up non-poisonous spiders -- showing as ground arachnid -- are an ingredient in anti-venom.
Drinking sufficient quantity of an anti-venom will cure the drinker of all poisons they are suffering from, including: Assassin manufactured poison (e.g., Bloat, Achorion Purple), poisoned apples (tempted by Nadow), giant spider venom, scorpion sting, spoiled or otherwise unhealthy foodstuffs.
The cure is instantaneous on drinking, the poison's effects cease to apply. It does not provide any protection against future poisoning - this is a cure, not a vaccine. The poisons that can be cured with anti-venom usually cause stats damage, health points drain or both.
Breath freshener is a potion which freshens the breath of the drinker. It is often combined with cold cure to remove the garlic breath that it gives the drinker. Breath freshener is made from parsley. It does not need to be brewed. Breath freshener removes the garlic breath effect (occasionally produced as a result of spell failures, and obviously also by eating garlic) from the drinker.
Cold cure is a potion which cures the drinker of the common cold. Cold cure is made from honey and garlic. It must be brewed by a witch in order to be effective. Upon drinking sufficient quantity (typically one cup) of cold cure, the drinker is immediately cured of the common cold, along with the negative stat effects that go with it. It also gives the drinker garlic breath.
Energy tea is a potion which provides a temporary boost to the GP of whosoever drinks it. Energy tea is made from ginger, borage and ground coffee. It must be brewed by a witch in order to be effective. The potency of energy tea is proportional to the brewing bonus of the witch who brewed it; a more potent energy tea restores more GP.
Upon drinking, energy tea has three immediate effects:
The maximum GP boost lasts for a period of time proportional to the brewer's brewing bonus - typically around 3 - 5 minutes. Typical amounts for both GP effects are in the range 100 - 200 GP. Witches often counteract the poison effect by mixing energy tea with anti-venom. The drinker's GP cannot be brought below zero as a result of the GP drain (it is reduced to zero instead), however, draining to zero GP increases the chance that the above stat drain will occur.
Once the boost wears off, the drinker will immediately lose an amount of GP equal to that which they initially gained. Additionally, there is a chance at this point that the drinker will also suffer a one point penalty to their intelligence stat, which will last for 10 - 20 minutes.
Focus tea is a potion which provides a witch with information about one of her memorized spells. It serves a similar purpose to the wizards' spellcheck command. Focus tea is made from Floppy Madmen mushrooms, as found in the vicinity of Granny Weatherwax's cottage. Upon drinking focus tea, the drinker will start feeling woozy, and then be encouraged to 'focus' on a spell that they have memorized. Focus tea does not need to be brewed. They will then enter a trance-like state (or, from the point of view of an observer, fall asleep), in which they will be visited by the spell they have memorized.
The spell will then tell the witch various information about itself - namely:
For every stage checking the success uses some GP. If the witch runs out of GP while focusing on a spell the results might not be complete. The assessment of success or failure at each stage is an estimate, which is more accurate with a higher magic.spells.special bonus. While in the trance, the witch cannot take enter any commands at all.
This is probably a "base" chance with many modifiers after it. You receive many messages which indicate a range of the likelihood of success for each skill:
Healing tea is a potion which heals the drinker. Healing tea is made from yarrow and comfrey, and to obtain proper potency must be brewed by a witch. When drunk, healing tea will drastically increase the HP regeneration of the drinker. Note that healing tea does not provide an 'instant fix' like blue water - rather its healing is distributed over time. The potency of healing tea is proportional to the brewing bonus of the witch who brewed it. The HP regeneration rate improvement gradually decreases as time progresses - so on drinking it might (for example) heal 100 hitpoints per second, but after 10 seconds this could have dropped to 25 hitpoints per second. Healing tea wears off either when the hitpoint regeneration improvement decreases to zero, or when the drinker reaches full health.
Intelligence tea is a potion which raises the drinker's intelligence stat for a period of time. Intelligence tea is made from sage. It must be stirred with an owl feather and then brewed by a witch in order to be effective. The potency of intelligence tea is proportional to the brewing bonus of the witch who brewed it; a more potent intelligence tea confers its benefits for longer for a given amount drank. Upon drinking intelligence tea, the drinker's intelligence stat is raised by one point.
