Mountain Emergency

Overview:
This is an emergency scenario that should let the teams demonstrate their teamwork and knowledge.
While out hiking the patrol/Pack come across another hill-walker who has slipped on an incline and apparently injured his legs and is unable to walk unaided. He has been lying in the open and exposed to the elements for an unknown period of time and at this stage is quite cold and seems to be confused as to his whereabouts.
Pre-programme activities:
First Aid; Map and compass; Emergency services visit;
Space requirements:
Outdoor – ideally on a mountain to lend as much realism to the scenario as possible

Equipment required per six:
1 x Foil Blanket
2 x Orange Bivvy Bags
1 x Torch
1 x Whistle
2 x Brush Handles
1 x Mobile Phone (imaginary)
1 x Large scale map
4 x tent pegs
Equipment required per base:
Injured Walker, either a real person or a dummy. One of the team members could be used for this.
Base setup:
If part of a hike, the base should be set up so that they will find it on their route.
If possible have the “injured” person lying prone. They “injured” person should be dazed, unable to answer simple questions (i.e. hints of symptoms of hypothermia)
How to run the base:
Either tell the scenario to the teams as they arrive, or let them figure out what they must do (depending on skill level).

Possible expansions to the activity:
Tell them light is failing and they must find a way of sheltering the injured person from rain and cold and provide them with warmth (ie build a bivvy and light a fire).
1. Contact the emergency services (112 or 999)
2. Tell rescue services were they are, using map provided.
3. Using bivvy bags mark out location so it can be seen from the air.
4. Make a stretcher to move casualty from open ground to just inside tree line. This is to protect him from getting any colder.
5. Wrap casualty in foil blanket and explain reason.
6. Be able to guide ground rescue teams to their location using whistle blasts (3 long blasts every 30 seconds)
7. Be able to demonstrate how to use the torch to guide rescue teams to their location in failing light.
