PROJECT: ISSUES IN MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the project, the student must be able to demonstrate proper attitude and skills towards meeting, solving, and avoiding all possible problems that may arise in association with medical emergencies in terms of:
1. Lack of medicines
2. Lack of diagnostic facilities
3. Lack of treatment facilities
4. Indications for referral to hospital and subspecialist
5. Medicolegal problems
LEARNING STRATEGIES/ACTIVITIES/RESOURCES:
Individual learning activity for the student -
1. Go to the community, hospitals, emergency rooms, clinics, and any health care units in the community and be exposed to medical emergencies.
2. Look for the following specific issues involved in the medical emergency situations encountered:
2.1 Lack of medicines
2.2 Lack of diagnostic facilities
2.3 Lack of treatment facilities
2.4 Indications for referral to hospital and subspecialist
2.5 Medicolegal problems
Note: Student can include other issues aside from those listed above.
3. Make "Critical Incident Reports" on the above issues.
Describe in writing the actual situations encountered; what were done either by the student or by a physician to solve the problems or issues; and reflection of the student.
4. Make personal plans on how to avoid the problems or issues
4.1 in the student's house or family and
4.2 in the health care unit that the student will be assigned to, focusing on the municipal health unit.
5. Prepare 3 draft copies of reports and plans.
6. Present and discuss critical incident reports and personal plans with faculty and peers giving and receiving feedback.
7. Improve critical incident reports and personal plans and then submit 3 copies to faculty.
