I. 2020 – 2021 YEAR IN REVIEW

1. MINUTES OF 2020 MEETING

A. Approved 2019 and 2020 minutes. Unanimous.

2. PRESIDENT’S REPORT

A. MEMBERSHIP NUMBERS

I. 2020: 50 members (36 league, 4 Learn-to-Curl, 10 Social). Many of the members paid dues, with no intention of curling due to COVID.

II. 2019: 64 members (44 members, 16 Learn-to-Curl, 1 Social)

B. LEAGUE NIGHTS

Went good; but too short. With restrictions started 2 weeks late, lost 20 regular players (including 4 skips), staggered games times, played with single sweepers, no social time after games, had several weather cancellations, and the season ended early. Followed the COVID procedures that were mandated; we did not have any problems or issues. Ended up only playing 6 games.

I. Tuesday had 6 teams. Team Lassila (Gary Lassila, Brian Carlson, David Morehouse) won (5 wins, 1 TW)   Team Hughes (Alex Hughes, Charlie Klein, Henry Schmidt) second place (4 wins, 2 losses).

II. Thursday had 6 teams. Team Hughes (Alex Hughes, Corey King, Esa Leppanen, Cole Klein) won (5 wins, 1 TW), with Team Lassila (Gary Lassila, Hugh Smith, Gretchen Kristola, Dave Morehouse) second place (4 wins, 1 loss, 1 TW).

C. Learn to Curl. Only 4 new curlers. They were dedicated and plan to curl this upcoming winter.

D. SCHOOL GROUPS - Due to the Coronovirus we did not offer school curling.

E. ICE RENTALS

I. 1 rental group. Made $120.00. ( 2019: had 27 rental groups. Made around $2670.00)

II. MTU Blue Key (Winter Carnival) rented ice for 1 day. Paid $200.00. Usually rents for two weekends for $500.00.

F. OPEN HOUSES - Did not hold any open house this year.

G. CLUB-SPIEL. Yes and had lots of fun. Was suggested to have a club spiel at the beginning of the season for everyone to warm up; and another at the end of the season.

3. TREASURER’S REPORT – Jarod

BALANCE AS OF APRIL 2020 $15,825.09

BALANCE AS OF APRIL 2021 $15,483.61

Loss of revenue - $341.48

CREDITS: Dues $4774.30, Clothing $610.00, Rentals $320.00, Equipment $90.00, Donations $52.05, Interest $1.48

Total $5,847.83

DEBITS: Utilities $1776.98, Misc. Equipment/Supplies $389.54, Apparel Purchase $1610.25, Payments to Affiliations $1512.00, Compensation $450.00, Insurance $300.00, Lease/Rent $100.00, Fees $30.54, Services $20.00

Total $6189.31

Motion to Approve Treasurers Report. Approved by unanimous vote. Loss was mainly due to loss of membership this year and lack of rentals due to the COVID. Katie Jo designed a new logo for the CCCC Curling Club. Rob Handler worked with Copper Island Printing (Calumet) to purchase apparel for sale at the Club House.

4. CERTIFICATIONS - No new certifications.

II. NEW BUSINESS

1. IMPROVEMENTS AND PROJECTS

a. Inline water filter system (de-ionizing system). Gary spoke with Calumet Township getting assistance for the purchase of system; and the Township Board approved paying $6000.00. Culligan (South Range) quoted that price for purchase; if there is additional costs the Curling Club would be responsible. The Township has asked for recognition only. June or July 2021 Culligan will install. We will be getting 4 tanks; 2 on standby. Approximately $300.00 to recharge the tanks.

b. Shaver beam and blade. Thompson Rink (Winnipeg, MB) makes them.

c. Signage on Red Jacket Road. New sign will go on the green building, the corner closest to the Colosseum. It will be high enough near the eaves for visibility year around. Cost is $800.00 with the Calumet Township paying 50%. The Keweenaw Park Service has approved the design. Koski Signs will be installing it. Suggestion to move the sign on the Club building for better visibility; would cost $1000.00 to move it. Possible to have Koski Signs do it while installing other sign.

d. Fans. Pulls in cold air; needed mostly to extend Spring season. $400.00 each. May need electrician to wire.

e. End to End Vinyl. Rolls out, has the lines and houses already printed on it. Will need to be rolled back up at the end of the season. $3000.00 per sheet; hack to hack. Gary will contact Green Bay Curling Club to see how this holds up after 3 to 4 years. Suggestion to repaint concrete; it was stated that with the freezing and thawing the paint cannot hold up. The cracks in the ice can be temporarily fixed. The paint needs to be removed before laying down the vinyl. Gary does not want to be in charge of this project; there were no volunteers. Tabled.

f. Gordon has suggested we may be eligible for a Darwin – Curtis grant; it is a 50/50 grant. Entries must be in by June 1st; will get further details from Gordon. Darwin-Curtis issues $25,000 to ALL clubs in the USA; so there is not an amount we can count on. Projects that demonstrate increasing membership.

g. Need additional lighting at the ends of the Curling rink. Need more lighting above each of the houses; especially at the far end. Possibly just need brighter bulbs. Will purchase 1 box of bulbs to try out, before purchasing additional bulbs. Louie Vencato agreed to check on the cost of converting ballasts and bulbs to LED.

2. COPPER SPIEL – Drew. Have 8 teams that will definitely come; with 15 teams on a waiting list. We would like to host a Bonspiel; but will hold off any decision until Fall with the COVID situation. Date tentatively scheduled for the 3rd weekend in January. We are in need of volunteers to solicit donations and sponsors of the event. And volunteers to work on and at the event. Suggestion to make a poster of all the improvements that the Club has made in the last 5 years to encourage participation in future bonspiels.

3. OTHER BUSINESS

a. Suggestion to add another league night of curling for individuals who do not want to curl the late shift. The Club has available Monday and Friday mornings and evenings. We do have a Saturday pickup league in the mornings. Minimum would be 8 people for 2 teams. Put this on the membership application to see if there is interest.

4. BY-LAW CHANGE.

No longer paying rental on Post Office Box. Change address from the Post Office box to 57189 Mackinac Trail, Calumet, MI 49913. Put in mail slot on building. Unanimous vote to approve by-law change.

III. ELECTIONS
