I. YEAR IN REVIEW

        1. Minutes of 2013 Meeting: Sue. Minutes were read. Motion to Accept as read by Walt Milligan, 2nd by Noel Hanson. Unanimously approved.

        2. Acting President’s Report: Gary Lassila

                a.  Membership

                        i. 2014 Membership: 64 members. 7 are 1st year non-college members, + 5 in the instructional league that should be regular members next year. If we can get 8 teams in both the Tuesday and Thursday leagues, we can have 2 early games, 2 late games and NO byes. That way all teams will curl every week.

                b.  Drill house Improvements

                        i. The new side boards, sealing windows/eaves & new carpet (Barry Tippett, Gerry Lamppa, Noel Hanson, and Gary did the work). The sideboards made the look of the curling area better. Sealing the windows and eaves kept out the wind   and snow; thus kept the ice cleaner (less dirt falling from the rafters). The carpeting was a terrific improvement by keeping the ice cleaner from dirt tracking in; and was much safer coming out of the warm room.

            c. League nights

                        i. There were a lot of weather issues this year with cancellations and forfeits due to storms & blizzards.

ii. The college teams seem to forfeit too often. Need to emphasize to give early notice when unable to play.

iii. Tuesday: 7 teams. Eisenman defeated Strome in the Tuesday Championships.

iv. Thursday: 7 teams. Vencato defeated Eisenman in the Thursday Championships. There was no final game to determine Club Champion, so we have 2 Champions.

Should we have a Club Bonspiel instead of playoffs and Tuesday and Thursday champions? Consider for 2014-2015 season.

                   v. Wednesday: had 10 regular members and 3 of them joined the Thursday night league. 2 joined after the Olympic Open House and signed up for the Wednesday instructional league.

                d.  Private Parties, School Groups

                         i. Approximately 125 Washington Middle School and Calumet High School students curled this year.

ii. Each student had 3 class periods at the Drill House. Gary and Noel worked with students.

iii. 4 private groups and 3 downstate hockey teams Farmington United, Brighton, Detroit Jesuit rented the facility. It has become popular that the parents and family members curl also. Made approximately $1200.00.

iv. MTU Winter Carnival: used only 1 weekend, not 2 weekends as in past. Should we charge them rental fees? Maybe lose them. Blue Key & students did a great job in cleaning up.

                e. Open Houses

                        i. Three held in December, two during the Olympics. We got 10-15 people for each Open House and we got 4 new members. The attendees from the Olympic Open Houses will hopefully join us next year.

                f. Shirt Sales

                        i. 70 orders to our members. Charged $10.00 for regular T-Shirts; $13.00 for Long-Sleeve T-Shirts; $17.00 for sweatshirts; $20.00 for hooded Sweatshirts. We made $3.00 - $4.00 per shirt. Put on the web site? Not yet until we     have sufficient stock to sell, as of now only have a few extra shirts. Can we add the pins and coins for sale on the web site? Alex will check into. Before proceeding with shirt/hoodies/sweatshirt/tote bag sales we need a locker or secure place to store. This needs to be available in Drill House, so we can sell while groups are playing but secured for theft purposes.

                g. Special Recognition: Paul Eisenman team had an EIGHT-ENDER. Team members: Paul Eisenman (Skip), Walt Milligan (Third), Katie Jo Wright (Second) & Dan Fuhrman (Lead). Received recognition in USCA Curling News and each received an eight-ender acknowledgement patch from the USCA. The USCA also forwards the photos and team information to the American Curling Foundation and Museum. The article was also submitted to the Daily Mining Gazette – and we are still waiting for publication.

        3. New Equipment

                a. Purchased 5 new brooms and several sliders to replace the roughest ones and remove the old brooms.

Continue to buy 5 new brooms per year.

                b. Nipper -- big improvement to the quality of the pebble and ice. A new nipper costs $1550.00 and we paid $350.00.

        4. Treasurer’s Report:

                a.  Financial Report & 501©3 update: Noel

Balance as of April 2013 = $4848.59. Income (Interest, dues, open houses, pins and shirt sales) 9781.64. Expenses (501c3, Main St Calumet, Drill House Equipment, Pins, Dues, Calumet Township, Copper Island Printing + One time               Donation to Calumet Township of $1000.00 for roof repair) $9193.69. Balance as of April 2014 = $5436.54. See attached report for details.

Mike M made a motion to accept the Treasurers report, 2nd by Barry Tippet. Vote was unanimous to accept report. 501c3 is still in process needing acceptance. All paperwork is okay; will need additional paperwork over the years to keep compliant.

        5. College Curling Report

                a. Finlandia University: Soren Schmidt – did not attend and there was no report. It was reported that Finlandia University came in Fifth in the Country in the College Championships. The quality of sportsmanship was not present at the               Bonspiels/Championships. We need to make Soren more responsible for the conduct of teams during tournament play. And during league play have the teams more balanced with experienced and new curlers. Some of the teams were all new         players and thus did not play well.

                b. Michigan Tech University: Nick Hlivak – did not attend and there was no report. Nick is a senior this year and will be looking for new leadership. Max Tollefson is reluctant to do this. There is a need for a non-student advisor from MTU to               coordinate. There were NO volunteers.

        6. Copperspiel – Sue: Per suggestion there is a need to be on Social Media (Twitter and Facebook) as e-mail is dead. With the grant pending and possible new warm room…NO Bonspiel for 2015. Go for CopperSpiel in 2016. Also to make any       Bonspiel successful, it needs to be reciprocal. If we expect teams from other Clubs to come to our Bonspiel….we need to send teams to their Bonspiels.

        7. College and Olympic Report – Gordon

        8. Certifications

Alex is a Level 1 Instructor and has worked with several groups this season. The next (closest) is Blaine, Minnesota on May 17. The USA Curling website has not updated the clinics for 2014 Summer/Fall Sessions.

II. ELECTIONS

        1. Election of Board Members (3 year terms, 2 seats available)

                a. Floor Nominations: Gary and Soren (had indicated he was interested. Moved by Gordon, Second by Paul

                b. Vote: unanimous

                a. Reduce? (60-120-180 to 60-100-160?) Based on only playing 10-12 league nights per season.

                        i. Raise cost to play 2nd night to $20.00? $30.00? $20.00

                c. Simplify Application Form? Alex?

                d. Invite former members back at "first year" rate after 3+ years absence? Family rates?

        2. Grant Update

                a. DNR Recreation Passport Grant -- Bill Olson of UP Engineering. This grant is awarded to local units of government to provide public outdoor and indoor recreation, with an emphasis on renovation of existing facilities. Paul Lehto is very       positive that the Calumet Township will get the grant. The DNR announces the projects slated in November; so probably  will no see results for the upcoming curling season. Grants require a 25% match (labor or money). The wood and junk in                 the 1st part of the building has been removed already.

                 b. $45,000 for the building

                        i. $25,000 for warm room & bathrooms

ii. $20,000 for concrete floor, improvements in other part of building

Multiple Activities: the warm room will be shared by multiple groups. Paul is looking at getting horseshoe leagues, archery ranges, climbing wall, etc in the 1st part of the building.

Make the building compliant with the Disabilities Act.

                                                Offer wheelchair curling, stick curling.

Also roof and beams could be fixed. CCCC could offer volunteer help. We are in an advisory capacity; but cannot tell the Township how to use the money.

                c. Sketch: Upon request of Paul Lehto, Gary did a sketch for warm rooms; including kitchen and locker rooms. Single uni-sex bathroom and be ADA compliant. See attached.

                d. Darwin Curtis Fund Grant: There are 2 types of grants: Growth & Development + Bricks & Mortar. Both of these grants require proof of 501©3 status. Do not pursue further until our status changes.

        3. League Play, playoffs

                a. Switch playoffs to league nights? One Tuesday Champion, one Thursday Champion. Playoffs on league nights?

                        i. Too many shared players to have a single club champion

ii. Some people cannot make Saturdays

                b. Playoff Subs: teams should get a sub lead for lead position, sub second for second player, etc.

        4. Copper Dog Weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday February 28- March 2)

                a. Committee is looking for activities for people in town

                        Open House and Curling Demonstration

Need to be on Copper Dog poster

                        Volunteer Chairman: Noel

        5. Curling Rock Ice Statue? Photo

                a. MTU Winter Carnival: Curling rock ice statue?

                b. Red Jacket Road or other Calumet area, earlier in season? Maybe by the piece of copper in the park?

        6. Club Improvements/Summer Projects

                a. Signage needed: We need a proper sign on Red Jacket Road to have people turn between the Colosseum and the long green building; not into the school parking lot. A large lighted sign just below the roof line that would be visible from the road. See photo.

                b. Improve lighting and clean up visible wiring. Need to have uniform lighting and upgrade the wiring in the curling area. This would be beneficial to the quality of lay and enhance the overall look of the Club.

                c. Continue sealing cracks and other small projects

                d. Repair scraper: Hood of the scraper needs to be reattached and there is also an oil leak underneath. Get to a mechanic for overall checkup and fix any leaks. A metal shop could reattach the hood.

                e. Pilot light on stove: needs to be left on. Need another warmer?

        7. Volunteer requested to vacuum carpet, empty trash containers, etc 1-2 hours per month.

        8. Anyone interested in learning ice maintenance duties, assisting? Gary to change locks on doors. In order to get a key, you need to take class on ice maintenance, pebbling, scraping, and set up. Set up pre-season meeting of all skips to get keys. Winning skips shall pebble for the next game.

        9. Any other business? Formally acknowledged Gordon for being President of the CCCC for the last 12 years. Received a bottle of Scotch Whiskey.
