This year the Club is continuing the race credit system. The system is to show our volunteers that the club appreciates everything you do to help out. Without the huge time and effort put in by the volunteers, the club just wouldn't exist. We appreciate everyone has a life outside of running, so we would never want people to feel pressured to volunteer, life can be stressful enough without adding to it! However, we wish to acknowledge and give thanks to those that feel they are able to volunteer.
If anyone has any feedback on any aspect of the scheme, please feel free to speak to Cherry Fowler or anyone on the committee. Unless we get feedback, we will not know whether to continue the scheme.
This scheme does not attempt to recompense you for your time and effort, merely offer a token of appreciation. This scheme will cost the club nothing since the race entries given will be those not collected by entrants of the race. Usually, we can expect approximately 15% - 20% of entrants to not turn up.
Who gets a credit?
The committee have agreed that certain day to day roles within the club will receive a number of race credits. The number given tries to acknowledge the time commitment each role takes. The full list of who gets credits and how many has been finalised. If the trial proves successful, this list will be reviewed every year as roles and people change.
This year, we are organising 7 races, plus 2 GLCL races and a possible mob match. These will all need volunteers. The committee has agreed that anyone who offers to help for the entire race, will receive one race credit. If you agree to help before the race either on registration or car parking then you will receive half a race credit, as you are also able to run (for free if you have enough accumulated credits). The sweep does get a credit even though they have run because you aren't able to race.
At the top of this page is the race volunteer form which covers all races this year. Please put your name down against the races you wish to volunteer for and your preferred role. We will try and put people in their preferred role where possible. If you say you wish to run as well, you also need to complete the race entry form.
Once you have earnt credits, how can you use them?
Assuming the club races have a full complement of helpers, there are 7 opportunities to use your race credits and race for free. All of our races apart from the Magor 10k have plenty of race places available. The Magor 10k does sell out, however all races have no shows on the day, which has recently been around the 20% mark. We therefore do not anticipate the situation where you put your name on the list of those wishing to run and be unable to run on the day.
Please note that only brought forward credits can be used for the Rose Inn Series.
If you have a race credit to use and there is a club race you wish to enter, then you just have to register your interest in running using the form above. Registration for using credits closes at the same time as general race entries close.
At the race, the volunteer who has applied for an entry can collect their race number before the start of the race. Last year, it was felt that waiting until 10 minutes before the race was difficult. We have listened, so you no longer need to wait. However, you need to take account of the following conditions.
· Only volunteers who have filled out a form by the race closing date can claim a race credit. No form = no race entry. No exceptions.
There is a link above so that you can confirm that you are on the start list for the race of your choice. If you aren't on this list, there will not be a number for you, no excuses, not exceptions!
FAQ
1) Will I definitely get a place?
99% certain. Eg: Rose Inn May 14th 2024 had 210 entrants. Only 174 turned up. There were 36 unused numbers.
2) How do I know if I’ve definitely applied for a credit?
There is a link to a spreadsheet showing responses of the form.
3) Can I volunteer at the race and then run in it?
Yes - if you have previously earned credits.
Please note race credits are non transferable. Committee help credits do not role forward from one year to the next.
Volunteering at the Severn Bridge parkrun is not organised by the club and therefore does not fall within the scope of this system.
