RAG - running abroad group
The Running Abroad Group (RAG) was set up for members passionate about combining travel and running with other like-minded people. Its main aim however, is to promote inclusivity by offering various race distances to cater to everyone’s preferences along with a social platform for members to meet and feel safe in a different environment. The RAG is has become well established organising and facilitating two highly successful European trips this season.
The first trip took place in Budapest, where members participated in the Budapest half marathon in September, followed by a trip to Benidorm in November where 32 members competed in either the 10k or half marathon. Communication within RAG is facilitated through a What’s App group, keeping members informed about travel arrangements and offering constructive feedback. Recently, presentations were shared with all Chepstow Harrier members which was well received.
The RAG also includes members participating in the Super Half Series which entails running six half marathons in five years in six different European destinations: Cardiff, Prague, Copenhagen, Valencia, Berlin and Lisbon. This year a group is scheduled to run in Lisbon in March and Valencia in October with the goal of completing the entire Super Half Series within within five years.
The aim is to facilitate three to four running races annually, providing members with options to participate and compete regularly alongside fellow members, fostering a sense of camaraderie and companionship when travelling and competing. For further information on the RAG group please contact either Gill Ellis or John Cobbe.
Update after Lisbon by Gill:
"Wow!! Another very successful RAG weekend in Lisbon. The hot weather and a tedious out and back course affected race times yesterday. On the plus side the start over the Vaso de Gama bridge made up for it and we all made it past the finish line safely lots of activities went on in the group from walking, Tuk Tuk tours and open top bus rides to see this amazing historic city. Not forgetting sampling the infamous Portuguese tarts and Codfish bites washed down with Super Bock beer and Lisbon wine The grand finale being a meal out at a local Italian restaurant organised by Stuart who was also birthday boy yesterday. The laughter, camaraderie and bucket loads of support is what being a member of harriers is all about. If you are not in the RAG what’s app group and would like to join then please contact myself or John Cobbe. The next RAG trip is Valencia in October and looking at Berlin next April. "
