Hanukkah Bear by Eric A. Kimmel read aloud

Today we are making stars to brighten our houses.

Our craft is a simple and delicate way to brighten your days and bring light into it with colorful stars for your windows.

One of the two star designs below represents the Star of David, its shape is a hexagram, the combination of two equilateral triangles and has been a symbol the Jewish faith and Hanukkah - The Festival of Lights since the 17th century.

The word Hanukkah, Chanukah or Ḥanukah means Rededication.

Every year, the celebration lasts for 8 days and 8 nights and happens at any time between late November and late December, in 2020 it begins on the evening of December 10th.

During this eight-day holiday people celebrate, eat and remember the main meaning, to bring light and celebrate the miracle in our life.

Step by Step 5 point star (The Star of David)

  1. Start with 2 squares cut to 10 x 10 (or just 2 squares of any size)

  2. For each of the squares carefully fold and press down diagonally each way, then open out again to form a cross on the tissue paper. These are just guide lines.

  3. Fold the top corner down to the middle line and press, then open again, this is another guide line.

  4. Bring the bottom corner up to meet the guide line you just made and press down well.

step 3

step 4

5. Fold down a thin triangle, from the top corner to meet the bottom of the tissue paper. This is the hardest step, we are trying to make an equilateral triangle. Do this on both sides of the tissue shape.

6. The little tip that is hanging down needs folding up in another triangle to meet the edge on both sides.

step 5

step 6

7. When both squares of tissue paper are equilateral triangles take a glue stick and secure all the folds well.

8. Then glue one over the other -->

to form the six pointed Star of David

Add a dab of glue or sticky tape to a corner and place it in the window. The folds in the tissue paper create beautiful shades and shapes in the light and add to its beauty.

Step by Step 8 point star

  1. Take a sheet of tissue paper and measure 5 x 5 inch squares ( you need 8 exactly the same)

Your main cut out shapes should look like this --->

  1. For each of the 8 squares fold in half

  2. Then open the fold and place in front of you as a diamond, then fold either corner to meet the middle line you made. It should form a kite shape.

  3. When every one of the 8 squares look the same

4. When all of the 8 squares look the same, take a glue stick and apply a good amount to the kite shape as shown

5. Each kite shape overlaps the one before it until they are are all placed together and the star is complete.

When they are hung at the window they create a beautiful display.
