Celebrating Spring

To celebrate Chinese New Year - February 2021

  • Written with the help of one of our families this craft celebrates the onset of Spring and Chinese New Year.

  • This craft needs a sheet colored construction paper (ideally red), pencil, scissors and glue

  • Advanced - add Firecrackers with a little thread or string!

  • EXTRA papercraft - Year of the Ox decoration (at the end)

The symbol Chūn - Spring

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival marks the end of winter. Spring and the New Year celebration starts on the first day of the first month on the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. It ends on the 15th day with the Lantern Festival.

In 2021 this begins February 3rd and will be the year f the Ox.

Chūn - Spring - It is pronounced as CH-WehN. The meaning of Chun is 'spring'.

Hóng – Red - Red is the color of the season. The reason is that red, hóng, is a homophone (a word with more than one meaning) It means prosperity or wealth, and the color is traditionally shorthand for everything lucky or fortuitous.

Thank you to Mrs Evelyn Wang and Ray (1st Grade) for helping produce this Craft-a-Long

Step by Step

  1. First you will need 1 sheet of (ideally red) construction paper.

  2. Then you will need to print out the template for the stylised symbol

Folding and Cutting - Part 1

The template should be lined up along the longest side of the triangle and either side of the folded triangle can be used but be aware when you fold the shape out again the square might look different!

Both are correct and the end result is the same so don't worry

Lined up

Cut out

Gluing and Shaping - Part 2

Folding up the pattern to glue it. The symbol should be pointed end up, rounded shape hanging down from the stylised character.

Threading and finishing - Part 3

Firecrackers - Advanced Steps

  1. Using the leftover piece of red construction paper draw 6 lines x 1.5 inches apart

  2. Cut these out

  3. Glue one end of all of them and roll them tightly around a pencil and leave to dry

Roll up the strips as shown here

4. With a sharp pencil or a needle and thread make a hole in each of the cylinders and string them together in a line

5. Attach the 6 Firecrackers to the bottom part of the decoration to complete the more advanced Paper Spring craft

BONUS Year of the Ox Project

If you master the folds in the first project you can try the next one for the Year of the OX (2021).

Thank you again to Mrs Evelyn Wang for helping make this happen. Xie Xie (Thank you)
