In the history of the vessel, a small part of the road has been travelled so far. The goal is a self-sustaining, off-grid vessel to travel and live on. Think Biosphere 2 but on water. Closer to a Generation Ship than a boat in the end.
To fund that goal, working spin-offs are presented. So far, this constitutes a basic platform on which to build what ever you imagine, but capable of generating it 's own energy requirements for traveling, heating water, refrigerating, freezing,... in a sustainable way. At a cost achievable for the majority, not a toy for the few. Design principles: Form follows function
The boat is designed with an underlying idea: to use today's knowledge and technology for creating a world that becomes better suited to life instead of offering less and less possibilities for future generations. The idea is that it is possible now without concessions to comfort.
The guides to get there are sustainability, durability, as maintenance-free aspossible, modularity and becoming as self-sustaining as possible.
Sustainability:
When using resources not doing so in a rate faster than the rate at which the resources are replenished. By doing so, guaranteeing the future generations will have the same or better options then we have.
Durability:
To design something that will last a lifetime, countering the limited lifespan consumer culture.
As maintenance free as possible:
This is to add to the general comfort as well as to add to the longevity as well as reducing the ecological footprint. The idea, to make a sustainable off-grid housing on a boat, that would need toxins splattered on every few years to stay in good shape, just does not sit well.
Modularity:
To make it possible to make components inter-changeable, so repairs can be done swiftly and don 't require specialized knowledge. To make it possible to expand your model at a later time should your requirements become different, like different environment, children came into your lives,...
As self-sustaining as possible:
To generate your own energy requirements in a sustainable way, thereby never needing to pay again to move the boat, heat the house, keep produce refrigerated,...
