What do people who have strong leadership skills know or know how to do? To prepare this essay draw from all that you have learned from completing the individual leadership plan and assessments (MBTI and Strengths Quest), from completing the required workshops conducted by Ms. Kasperbauer, and from reflecting over how your own experiences (or those you have observed from others, including attributes described in the books you have read) have confirmed or challenged your understanding of leadership. Your essay should synthesize your answers to these questions:
What are the top 3-4 attributes that effective leaders possess?
What evidence supports these attributes? Evidence may come from your coursework, workshops, literature, your own experiences, observations about how others have led, your ILP, etc.
How does the evidence confirm or challenge your conclusions about leadership?
What steps are you taking to become a better, more effective and informed, leader?
Tip 1: Read reflections from leaders who have determined how their experiences, challenges, successes, and failures have shaped them as leaders.
Tip 2: Consider how your leadership training has informed your response to or your understanding of something. For example, how have you applied what you learned about communication styles in a team setting? What were the results? Or, how does something you learned from your leadership training (e.g., strengths) explain why something happened the way it did, or the outcome, whether positive or negative?
See the checklist at the bottom of the guidelines for writing reflections.
