Courses

Use the prompts and guiding questions below to help you write about the impact of your coursework on your learning.

List and Describe

List and describe key courses in your academic career. You may want to consult the syllabi from the courses, your unofficial transcripts, and the course catalog for class descriptions.

Contextualize

  • Where, in what context, was this course completed? Was it required for your master's program?

  • What are the program learning outcomes of the course? If needed, consult the syllabus where the learning outcomes are listed.

  • How did your instructor determine how well you understood the material? What assessments did you complete, e.g., did you take exams, write papers, make presentations, etc.?

Provide details

  • What did these assessments require that you know or apply? Identify the topics and skills covered in the assessments.

  • How did you prepare for these assessments? Did you read for information or understanding? Work problems? Take notes? Prepare outlines? Complete pretests?

  • How well did you do on these assessments?

  • Did mastery require a certain score?

  • Were you required to repeat an assessment if your previous try did not demonstrate that you knew the material?

  • Did you receive feedback from your instructor? If so, what did he or she say?
