I, Hazel Allen Avery, would like to thank Mr. J.D. Calhoun, Business Education teacher, for starting the V.O.T. (Vocational Office Training) program. Because of Mr. Calhoun, my first job along with other classmates was with the Veterans Administration, on West Peachtree. We worked from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm, 5 days a week.
After graduation, I stayed with the VA. In January of 1967, I started with the IRS, so between 1965 and 1970 I worked with both the VA and IRS. I worked from 1970 until 1973 in the IRS District Office. In march of 1973, I transferred to the United States Postal Service as a Postal Clerk/Window Clerk and I remained there until my retirement in April 2005.
At the advice of my father, vacationing has become very important, so I have traveled to six continents, Antarctica is the only one that I have not visited. A few of my favorite places which I have visited are New Zealand, Switzerland,Rio de Janeiro, China, Cape Town, Aruba, and my birth place, New York City. I also enjoy sports; football is my favorite. However, I enjoy baseball as well and I have visited all major league baseball stadiums within in a 10 year span.
