December 9, 2019 - Meeting

Holiday Wreaths & Swags

It's like being in a pine forest when you walk in the door! We'll create wreaths and swags to decorate our homes and bring in the wonderful smells of the holidays! Be sure to come with your gloves, florist wire, and clippers. There will be some decorations and ribbons available or bring your own. Please make reservations ahead so we have enough supplies! At this meeting, any guests you bring are requested to donate $10 for their arrangement.

November 11, 2019 (Veterans Day) - Meeting

Create your own Fall/Thanksgiving Table Arrangement

An annual, favorite activity for us all. Be sure to bring your clippers, floral wire, and gloves. Florist foam, flowers & greens, and some decorative items & candles will be available. Bringing items from your fall garden to share would be great! Please make reservations ahead so we have enough supplies! At this meeting, any guests you bring are requested to donate $10 for their arrangement.

Putting your Garden to Bed

Bring your own table setting (Placemat, flatware, plate, soup bowl, cup & saucer, water glass) and arrangement. Also, bring along at least one thing you do in your garden to put it to bed for the winter season. Let's compare notes!

BULBS, CORMS, TUBERS, AND RHIZOMES (aka GEOPHYTES) by Mary Heninger

Join us for a review of these amazing plant structures. Mary Heninger will show us how they differ

from one another, how to plant, when to plant, how to keep them going for years, and how to protect them.

  • Horticulture/ Design: Bring a terrarium or planter using mosses.

Hawk Watch Walk

Walk up Putney Mountain with Frankie Knibb looking for mosses along the way. Bring a book on mosses so we can identify what we see. At the summit, a hawk watcher will give a brief description of what we do in tracking the hawk migration each year. The views are spectacular! Wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes to protect your ankles and carry some water and a snack.

Note: the last section to the summit is steep. It's a mountain!

August 12, 2019 - Meeting

Teacup Arrangements at Holton Home

On this special evening, we will meet in the activities room at Holton Home. Each member is encouraged to bring along a young friend or family member aged 8 or up to work with the residents creating a fresh flower arrangement in a teacup. The finished arrangements will be placed on the dining room tables and in residents' rooms. If you have a give-away teacup, bring it along - we'll also be using some of Frankie Gibsons.

Annual Member Garden Tour 5:30 meet at Green Mt. Chapel for carpooling

Three special gardens: A Feng Shui Garden, a Meditative Garden, and a Picnic and Pool Garden will welcome members to walk among the flowers. A potluck picnic supper and pool will be available at our last stop.

Bring your pot-luck, bathing suits, and a towel!

  • Location: Carpool at Green Mountain Chapel - then off to Three Special Gardens!

  • Time: 5:30 meet in the Church/Chapel parking lot for carpooling

  • Hostesses: Pot Luck Thank you everyone for your quick response to bring something for the potluck…there were NO duplicates, yet!!

Monday is our 1st evening tour - July 1st 6-8pm

I have copied the minutes about the change here and we are also adding an additional garden thanks to Cassie Freese! (her address is incorrect in our member book - please correct to: 366 Hague Rd, Dummerston) Directions: Rt 30 over covered bridge, turn left then turn right onto Green Mt Camp Rd, then left onto Hague Rd. She is #366 and will have iced tea and a place to sit. Cassie's gardens are "revision gardens in progress"

Mary Heninger & Joan Seymour's gardens are still open for touring as well. It is hoped that the change of date & time will make it easier for everyone to take advantage of these beautiful locations!

Progressive Gardens Tours: The gardens of Joan Seymour and Mary Heninger have been available can be toured on the first Saturday of each month from April thru October from 10 a.m. to noon. But few have been by to see the gardens. A number of members said they really wanted to do this project, but the timing was not working for them. After considerable discussion, it was moved and seconded that we move the timing to the first Monday of the month from 6 to 8 p.m. The motion passed

The Real Dirt, Backyard Composting with Cheryl Wilfong

Master Composter, Master Gardener, and author of The Real Dirt on Composting.

Literally down-to-earth! Figure out how to set up composting in your own backyard. Learn about the ins and outs of composting - what goes into the compost and what stays out. Determine what to do about critters in the compost. Discover some creative ways to use your compost and feel good that you can join the green planet movement by not moving any farther than your own backyard.

12-2 PM, the garden club has been invited to have a special tour and walk through the 100+ year-old rhododendrums at Naulakha. This is open to 20 people only, at a cost of $5 per person. Floral Photography Workshop with Bill Steele

During this month's meeting, we will be learning from Bill Steele as we fine-tune the art of photographing flowers. He will talk about the exposure triangle and some fundamental elements of close-up photography. Bring your camera or cell phone (if that's your camera) and questions as there may be time to help you figure out what all those little buttons and settings do.

Flowers for Mom workshop

Brattleboro Farmer’s Market 10-11 AM

BFAGC will provide a few living flowers, potting soil and a planter to kids who would like to learn about gardening. Jill ST and Melissa K will be on hand to help the younger ones figure out how to make a living arrangement for their mothers. Donations to the garden club will be accepted (but not insisted upon). Other club members are encouraged to come help if they can (and perhaps purchase an extra six pack if they are out shopping, too).

April 8, 2019 - Annual Meeting

Annual Garden Club Banquet at the Chesterfield Inn

Allison Bell will present her new book project!

Her book is about Grace Niles from Pownell, VT, author of the 1904 Orchids book. Allison’s presentation includes slides and an amazing story about this unusual woman!

Here are some intriguing tidbits about this years' speakers and presentation.

    • Presented by Allison Bell and Maida Goodwin, the powerful story of the Pownal author and botanist Grace Greylock Niles (1864-1943) and the development of her writing career from her intense connection to her native area.

    • Allison Bell is a graphic designer and photographer, and Maida Goodwin is an archivist of the Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College. Both women are plant conservation volunteers for the state of Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program

    • In her 1904 classic book, "Bog-Trotting for Orchids," Grace Niles extols the wonders of the rich and abundant bogs and wetlands found in the Pownal and the northern Berkshire area and invites readers to explore the mysteries hidden within these wetlands.

    • Grace Greylock Niles: Queen of the Moccasin Flower.

    • Niles’ legacy inspired area conservationists to assist in the preservation of Mountain Meadow, a

    • 180-acre natural area reaching from Pownal to Williamstown.

    • She published "The Origin of Plant Names" in 1902.

    • She died in 1943 at the Brattleboro Retreat.

Shrub and Tree Pruning with Mary Heninger

Back by popular demand, we will review the reasons why, the when, and the how of pruning. Mary Heninger will have some examples to demonstrate methods and her favorite tools. If you have a potted shrub or small tree that needs pruning, bring it with you, as well as your favorite pruning tools.

8:45 AM departure from Exit 1 Outlet Mall for carpooling

(otherwise, meet at Smith College if you wish to drive yourself)

Join your fellow garden club friends in a treat for the eyes (and nose), seeing a glimpse of spring at the Smith College Bulb Show! $5 per person, includes all the bulbs—and the greenhouses if you want to walk through! We suggest wearing layers—and bringing your camera! It usually takes about an hour to walk through the show, although Saturday mornings are often very busy.
