Background:

Salik was born to Sakin, a Starfleet liason, and t'Valayn, a Romulan diplomatic aide who had defected with Proconsul M'Ret. His size, speed and strength, coupled with his intellect, were encouraged to develop as his parents encouraged his development. He was immersed in a respect for Vulcan logic and spirituality, and Romulan tactics and skill tempered with control. As he grew, it was apparent that his skill set lay outside the norms for Vulcans. He was accepted to train as part of the Ambassadorial Security Detail. Salik recieved intensive training in Suus Mahna, a Vulcan form of martial art. His training also included observation, proccedures and planning relative to acting as an official bodyguard. Salik was assigned to the Vulcan Ambassador on Qo'Nos, and accompanied her on her reassignment to Earth. While a member of her protection detail, Salik became friendly with a human of Pacific Islander decent, and they often spoke regularly about spirituality and it's role in their cultures.

Ambassador Talis eventually asked Salik to consider a service in Starfleet. With her blessing and sponsorship, Salik enrolled, earning a major in Law. Salik turned down the offer for Starfleet Marine Corps Training, and instead opted for Fleet assignment. In a random draw of Security personnel, he was assigned the USS Discovery.
