Terry C. Johnston
(1947-2001) was an American Western fiction author born on the plains in Kansas and he immersed himself in the history of the early West. As a young man, he traveled and worked on various jobs, all the while becoming a student of the Old West.
Terry C. Johnston published his first novel, Carry the Wind, in 1982. This novel won the Medicine Pipe Bearer's Award from the Western Writers of America. His first novel, Carry the Wind, , and his subsequent books, among them Cry of the Hawk, Dream Catcher, Buffalo Palace, Crack in the Sky, and the Son of the Plains trilogy, have appeared on bestseller lists throughout the country. Terry C. Johnston settled near Billings, Montana, and began to write a series of novels about the "Indian Wars" of the West, called the Plainsmen Series.
Terry C. Johnston's most famous books were a series of nine historical novels spanning the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade era and its eventual demise told through the eyes of the protagonist, Titus "Scratch" Bass. There are over five million copies of Terry C. Johnston's books in print.
Terry C. Johnston lived and wrote in Big Sky country near Billings, Montana. Terry C. Johnston died much to young of colon cancer in early 2001.
The Plainsmen Series are a series of novels written by author Terry C. Johnston (1947–2001). The series is mostly based on the "Indian wars" and composed of sixteen books namely:

11. A Cold Day in Hell: The Dull Knife Battle (1876)
12. Wolf Mountain Moon: The Battle of the Butte (1877)
13. Ashes of Heaven: The Lame Deer Fight (May 7, 1877) and the End of the Great Sioux War.
14. Cries from the Earth: Outbreak of the Nez Perce War - Battle of White Bird Canyon (June 17, 1877)
15. Lay the Mountains Low: Flight of Nez Perce from Idaho - Battle of the Big Hole (August 9–10, 1877)
