National Federation sanction is required for:
a. Any event that has a sponsor outside the school community (the event still must be sponsored by a high school, approved school or a state association itself.) The will also include title sponsors (ex. First National Bank Holiday Classic) as well as event organizers (ex. Heritage Scholarship Foundation).
b. Non-bordering event, if five or more states are involved
c. Non-bordering event, if eight or more schools are involved
d. International events (use international form, except for Canada, Bahamas, and Mexico)
TIMELINE AND FEE STRUCTURE – The timelines are interpreted to mean received in the NFHS office, not the VHSL office.
a. No later than 60 days prior to the event - $75 sanctioning fee: You should make an effort to have your request in the VHSL office at least 90 days prior to the event in order for the VHSL to process and send to the NFHS
b. Requests received 15 – 59 days prior to the event - $100 sanctioning fee ($75 plus $25 late penalty per event)
c. Request received less than 15 days prior to the event - $200 sanctioning fee ($75 plus $125 late penalty per event
If the National Federation does not receive the late penalty fee within 10 days of receiving the sanction application, the sanction application will be denied and the event sponsor will be notified that they are running a non-sanctioned event.
Duties of the Host School/Event Sponsor
a. Request current NFHS Application for Sanction of Interstate Athletic Events
b. Compete Section 1 of the application accurately – this includes supplying a list of the schools invited, with their addresses (this is a NFHS requirement – please so not just list all 50 states – the VHSL need the individual schools).
c. Have the application signed by the principal of the host school.
d. Forward the application with the appropriate fee (see schedule above), payable to the NFHS to the VHSL.
e. Within 90 days of the conclusion of the event, complete the financial report form
Please fill out your form carefully. Forms not complete will be returned to the schools/sponsoring agencies and this will hold up your sanction and could possible cause you to have to pay an additional fee to have the event sanctioned.
If you have any questions about the new sanctioning process, please call Laura Bickley at (434) 977 – 8475 or email her at lbickley@vhsl.org.
