Member schools are reminded to take all necessary precautions when dealing with high heat and humidity. It is important in all practice situations to offer plenty of hydration opportunities and to know the basic early warning signs of heat distress. The high heat and humidity associated with summer in the Commonwealth can make indoor and outdoor training and conditioning especially challenging. Exertional heat stroke is the leading cause of preventable death in high school athletics. Exertional heat stroke also results in thousands of emergency room visits and hospitalizations throughout the nation each year. The NFHS offers a FREE course on prevention of heat illness which is designed to give you the critical information you need to minimize the risk of exertional heat stroke among your athletes. The course presents seven fundamentals which, when followed, will minimize heat related illnesses of the students who participate.
